Yesterday, the Arqiva BAFTA TV award nominations were announced. Across 23 categories, the programmes currently leading the competition are Southcliffe and The IT Crowd, with four nominations each.
Yesterday, the Arqiva BAFTA TV award nominations were announced. Across 23 categories, the programmes currently leading the competition are Southcliffe and The IT Crowd, with four nominations each.
The IT Crowd’s stars are all up for awards, with Richard Ayoade and Chris O’Dowd nominated for Male Performance in a Comedy Programme, and Katherine Parkinson nominated for Female Performance in a Comedy Programme. The comedy show’s finale also garnered a nod for Best Situation Comedy, a category it shares with Graham Linehan’s new sitcom Count Arthur Strong, Toast of London and Him & Her: The Wedding. Ayoade and O’Dowd are up against The Wrong Mans’ Mathew Baynton and James Corden, while the other nominees for Female Performance in a Comedy Programme are Frances de la Tour (Vicious), Kerry Howard (Him & Her: The Wedding), and Doon Mackichan (Plebs).
Southcliffe, the story of a small town ripped apart by a mass shooting, is nominated for Leading Actor (Sean Harris), Supporting Actor (Rory Kinnear), Supporting Actress (Shirley Henderson) and Best Mini-Series. Broadchurch’s lead actress, Olivia Colman, will be hoping that she repeats last year’s success, where she won two awards. Broadchurch is also nominated for Supporting Actor in the form of David Bradley, and Best Drama Series.

In a reflection of current media-viewing trends, this year sees the first nomination for an online-only programme with House of Cards’ nomination for Best International Programme. With its second series recently premiering on Netflix, using award-winning actors such as Kevin Spacey have given the show cultural legitimacy, and acknowledgement by the BAFTA committee can only add to this. But they face fierce competition in the category from Breaking Bad, whose final season kept global audiences on tenterhooks (again thanks to Netflix, who released the show to UK audiences just one day after it aired in the US). And then there’s Borgen, one of the Scandinavian crime dramas that have found a comfortable home on BBC Four.
The BAFTA TV Awards will take place on 18th May, with the Television Craft Awards on 27th April. One award will be decided by members of the public – the Radio Times Audience Award, which you can vote for now. The full list of nominations can be read here.
