Arrow "Three Ghosts" (Spoilers!)

12/23/2013

Picture
We have a Christmas themed episode this week. (A very, very, loosely based episode. Ed.)

Picture
Following on directly from the previous episode, our hero has been beaten to a pulp by Cyrus Gold (Solomon Grundy) the first super powered criminal to appear in Arrow courtesy of Brother Blood’s super soldier serum, last seen on the Island. After his defeat, Oliver was also injected with random medical supplies and is on the verge of dying.

Kid Flash wakes up in our hero’s basement to be informed that Oliver Queen is The Vigilante and that they need his help to have his life. After making the discovery that Ollie was injected with a drug that makes blood clot too much, Barry makes the risky move of injecting him with rat poison (famous for thinning the blood to the point that it can't carry oxygen) luckily enough he strikes the right balance and Ollie seems ok.

This scene is followed by Oliver Queen returning home for a catch up with his mum who is putting up the christmas tree. She tells him that Thea won't come out of her room, or let her mother in. Roy is there with the arrow Ollie put in his leg last week, some battlefield medical treatment from Diggle later, and Roy is ok but still secretly planning to find out what happened to their murdered friend. On his way out, Oliver sees a vision of Shado who he'd previously seen while doped up on rat poison, but this time gets to speak to her. She tells him to give up fighting as it will only lead to heartache, tears and the death of his friends.

Back at the Arrowcave, Barry receives a lot more character development, as he's actively helping the team and his admiration for the Arrow as a hero comes through more. Although, he still has an answer for everything, including when he and Oliver talk masks and why Oliver doesn’t wear one (in case it obstructs his vision/aim).

In Laurel’s office, Thea and Sin arrive to ask her to help them find out about the blood drive which their dead friend attended before he was killed. It's important to remember that while she is willing to help, this blood drive implicates her new crush Sebastian Blood. This action highlights how far Laurel has come since season one. Going from defender of the poor to prosecutor in the DA’s office, and how her faith and morals have wavered since the death of Tommy.

Meanwhile, from a fingerprint left behind, Barry and Felicity have identified Cyrus Gold. Oliver wants to go track him down but is talked into letting Diggle take the lead due to the hallucinations.  In Gold’s apartment, Diggle finds a notebook on which is written the poem “Solomon Grundy,” (Born on a Monday, etc). Suddenly, Gold appears and attacks Diggle, tossing him around like a rag doll. Luckily, Diggle is able to climb out the fire escape, get in the car, and escape. Later, Arrow gives the information on Gold to Officer Lance, knowing he can't take him on himself. As they talk Oliver sees the ghost of Slade.

In the cave there is some flirting between Barry and Felicity before he tells her he knows she has feelings for Oliver. Then they turn the TV on to catch a news report about the particle accelerator that’s almost ready to be switched on in Central City, Barry’s hometown. They leave to give Oliver some privacy for target practice. Unfortunately, Slade Wilson appears, and is not someone to be messed with, even in ghost form. He criticizes Oliver’s motivations as a hero as a way to make up for his own sins more than his fathers as the two duel, and Oliver gets thrown through a glass window.

Picture
The police don't fare much better against Gold, as their team (which includes Brother Blood’s inside man) is ambushed. With only the Judas and Lance getting out alive. Laurel and Blood are taking a romantic walk after christmas shopping when Laurel receives the call about her father and Blood comes along to check up on his own man.

Roy has managed to break into the offices of the blood bank. Where he is captured and used as one of Brother Blood’s hostages Ollie breaks in for his final showdown with Gold. Roy is injected with the serum and appears to die as (once again) our hero is defeated. But at the last minute, he gets a visit from his third ghost, Tommy - Who tells him not to give up and that he has to fight on. He fires a lucky shot and blows up the centrifuge, dousing Gold with some sort of burning chemical and finally making him look more like Solomon Grundy.  Blood gets away but Oliver is just in time to revive Roy.

Meanwhile on the island... Ivo has captured Ollie, Sarah and Shado, and out of spite tells Oliver to choose which of the girls he wants to live. When he can't choose, Ivo does for him and kills  Shado. Seconds later, the revived Slade arrives and rescue the captives. Slade then demands to know what happened to Shado. Sarah lies and says he just shot her for no reason. Ollie says nothing and Slade vows revenge on whoever was responsible.

We discover that Sebastian Blood is running for mayor at the pleasure of his boss. The man who's really in charge and giving samples of blood for the super serum recipe. Slade Wilson. Wearing an eye patch and talking about making The Archer pay by driving an arrow through his eye. Old testament justice maybe?

Picture
Back in Central City Barry Allen gets back home as the nearby particle accelerator is malfunctioning, sending out waves of energy just as a lightning bolt strikes Barry Allen through an open skylight and throws him into a shelf of various chemicals. Leaving him alive but glowing and sparking with speed force!

Arrow will return in the New Year.
