This week’s episode was for all you Thor fans out there, as there are quite a few references to the God of Thunder and actually starts with the team cleaning up after Thor: The Dark World.

They’re then sent to investigate a Paganist hate group that are searching for the parts of an Asgardian Beserker Staff. The staff would possess the holder with superhuman strength and irrepressible rage. In doing so they come across Doctor Elliot Randolph, who we find out to be the owner of the staff and an Asgardian that had been posing as a human for over a thousand years.
Ward touches the staff and is filled with flashbacks relating to his brother being stuck in a well. This is the first time we see a real character development of Ward, as we get a glimpse of his past. The memory is something he has suppressed for years. We don’t find out the whole story of the well but it is obviously something that troubles Ward excessively and perhaps is the reason he can be so cold and stern. May also touches the staff however when Ward asked her how she could stand what she saw, she just states that she sees it every day. So there is also something troubling May, who always seems to be such a strong and steady person.
The effects were simple but were still great. There was many a tipped-over car, creepy corridors, alien mechanics and also many scenes of bad-assery, especially concerning Ward and May when they fight with the Pagans that have also been granted super-human powers. Coulson also has to stuff his hand into the Asgardian’s chest in order to keep him alive in order for him to heal, which seemed like a good idea but isn’t particularly good for those of you that are squeamish.
What I found quite funny is that Skye reverts to the role of the typical fangirl. She calls Thor dreamy and obviously has a thing for him, something that I know many people can relate to, whilst Fitz and Simmons looked wide eyed when the Asgardian’s true identity was revealed.
The episode ends with Skye and Ward at a hotel bar, and Skye tells him she is always there for him to talk to. When Ward goes to return to his room, he sees May enter hers with a bottle. She leaves the door open for him and he follows her (is there something going on there? That is up for discussion.) We then see Coulson having a nightmare and we see him actually in Tahiti. Perhaps we are on the path to learning more about what really happened there.
