This week’s episode of Agent’s of Shield takes the team to Hong Kong where Chan Ho Yin, a street magician, is taken due to his pyrokinetic ability, by a woman in a floral dress. He was found via a hack from the Rising Tide, Skye’s ex-affiliation, which leads to Coulson and May suspecting that perhaps Skye has something to do with it. However these premonitions cease when Skye locates the actual hacker, Miles, whom we find out that Skye has had, or is in (it’s hard to determine) a relationship with. This creates extreme doubt with Coulson who thinks perhaps they were working together. It turns out Miles sold the information to Project Centipede, who we saw in the pilot. They said to Chan that they would help to improve the power of his abilities and to make him known throughout the world but however they go back on this and he goes on a bit of a murderous rampage. We also find out a secret that Skye has kept hidden all of this time, but spoilers.

I will have to say that I was rather unimpressed with this week’s episode, and felt rather let down as I thought that “Eye Spy” was a remarkable improvement on the first few episodes. The storyline was obvious and predictable, and it was easy to stay two steps in front of the characters the whole way through, and I also found it lacking in any decent humour. The only real excitement I found was from the revelation of Sky’s secret at the end. Louis Changchien’s acting (Chan Ho Yin) was low class, compared to that of Clark Gregg (Coulson) and Chloe Bennet (Skye.) It is their acting, and the character development of Skye, that kept me shouting out in frustration.
The special effects were also pretty unremarkable. The flames that Yin produces are rather unrealistic and not at all lifelike, and I noticed for the first time how fake the plane looks whilst being up in the air. I know that so much more could have gone into the special effects we see, however I was impressed with the gruesome death of one of Chan’s doctors at Centipede. Impressed with the special effects of course, not that he was able to turn her to ash. And as always, all of the futuristic technology looks pretty real.
All in all I rate this episode very low. It is the sort of thing I want to wish never happened and continue on like it didn’t, however that can’t be done because it gives us some crucial information about both Project Centipede and Skye. Hopefully the next episode will have a better storyline and more lifelike special effects.
