Every show eventually reaches that level of awesomeness that it never has before, and will struggle to again. The pinnacle of it's brilliance. The latest episode of Agents of SHIELD could very well have reached it's pinnacle. Although not full of high-octane action and fight scenes that get your heart racing, like most AoS episodes, it has enough else going on to keep your eyes glued to the screen.
Now, usually, I don’t like to just focus on the plot of episodes, but that is the most important part of this episode, what makes it brilliant. It’s not complicated, it’s not confusing. It’s just tense, fast paced and teaches us a lot about what happened with Coulson. The team decide that, instead of letting Skye, they would track down the place that Coulson was revived from and save her in a similar way. On their travels, they come across agents Garrett (Bill Paxton) and Triplett (B.J Britt) sent to claim Ian Quinn. Coulson refuses to hand him over until Skye is saved, and so they have two temporary members added to their team.
Then there is the massive twist near the end of the episode. The whole place is set to blow, Fitz runs to give the found drug to Skye, and Coulson goes exploring. He finds a room marked ‘T.A.H.I.T.I.’ and finds out that the drugs had been coming from a blue-skinned humanoid corpse.
Of course, there is more to the episode than just the plot. The special effects are again first class, especially in making the holographic technology look extremely real. We get to see how the team react in a time of extreme crisis, managing to stick together and work as a team, despite the circumstances, in order to save Skye. And with the introduction of Lorelei, a famous Asguardian from the comics universe, there are many directions to be taken.
This episode is one of those you really have to watch. It’s powerful, emotional, and it leaves you on the edge of your seat the whole time.
