Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returned this week with a jaw-dropping, action filled and heart wrenching episode to kick off season two. Lets start with the two negatives, since its 95% positive: Skye’s new haircut doesn’t suit her and we are told nothing about these new recruits and why we should trust them, since one of them seems only in it for the money.
Firstly, it’s great to see the team back together after the summer hiatus. Yes, there are some new characters we don’t know that have seemingly tagged along just for the profit, but it’s good to know that SHIELD does have some allies. Coulson has slipped well into his role as Director of the new SHIELD, despite seeming slightly frazzled at the amount of work and the lack of positive outcomes (well portrayed by Clarke Gregg.) There seems to be a fast-growing budding friendship between Skye and Agent Triplett, though whether anything more will become of this it is yet to be know.
Throughout the episode, we see Simmons trying to help Fitz through his recovery. He is trying to create a cloaking device for the plane since Talbot, the head of the American military, has been doing what he can to find SHIELD. Fitz also tries to find out about the genetic make-up of Creel, however he struggles to communicate and has developed a very short temper. It’s hard to watch him struggle with Simmons trying to guide him but being yelled at at every turn. Their interactions also create the saddest moment of the episode, showing their reliance on each other.
The quality of the writing and strength of the acting created a fantastic episode managed to continue the mad rush and momentum of the season one finale.
