I’m sure I’m not the only person who did a little bit of an excitement-wee when they saw the new Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D promo revealed. So let’s have a little look at it together shall we…
I’m sure I’m not the only person who did a little bit of an excitement-wee when they saw the new Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D promo revealed. So let’s have a little look at it together shall we…
Firstly, Agent Phil Coulson. Yes, we’re all stoked to see him back on our screens, but some are expressing concerns that his survival will cheapen his death in Avengers Assemble. As he rightly said, they needed something to avenge. It was the turning point of the film, when the Avengers really became a team for the first time, and taking that death away could undo some of the heart behind the team.
Well first of all, we need to hear the ins and outs of how he manages to survive before we jump to any rash conclusions. We never actually see a dead Coulson carted off now, do we?
It’s already known that Nick Fury, in his infinite eye-patched wisdom, fudged the details a little to make Coulson’s death more dramatic (if you remember rightly, those trading cards were in Coulson’s locker… not his jacket pocket). My spidey-senses tell me there could have been more fakery going on there than we thought in order to inspire those crazy messed up superheroes to pull together. Credit to you Fury, it did one hell of a job!
If that’s the case, it will see Fury as more of a leader, almost a puppet-master, which is true to character and almost enhances the non-death of Coulson rather than cheapening it.

Who else can we expect to see? Well we know Joss Whedon is an incredible comic book nerd, so whilst we can pretty much assume he’ll be following comic book storylines, it’s pretty hard to guess which one from the endless choices. From the promo, we only see a glimmer of a super hero in a hood. Now this is all wild speculation, so don’t hold me to this, but I’m thinking Luke Cage/Power Man. Whedon can’t pick any of the big players, so we’re expecting lesser known heroes and villains to crop up (like DC do with Arrow), and Luke Cage fits the bill. My first guess (okay, hope) was that they’d follow the Civil War arc – in that S.H.I.E.L.D would be pursuing unregistered heroes such as Power Man. But despite the enormous raging girl boner that thought gave me, it’s just too complex. There’d be too much need for characters like Iron Man and Captain America to crop up on a regular basis. Plus, there are some distant rumours floating about that Avengers 3 may be following the Civil War and let’s face it, that would be so incredibly awesome I daren’t imagine it.
All in all, I think we can expect a very Whedon-humoured (“Don’t touch Lola”), action packed, true to the comic books series, littered with nerd-on inducing references. My guess is it’ll be following lesser known arcs and characters, and setting up for some truly badass cameos in Avengers 2.
