Breaking Bad - "Ozymandias" Review (Spoilers!)

9/22/2013

God, wasn’t the last episode cruel? Cutting off mid shoot out? That was outrageous! Still, surely that’s the worst of it. I’m sure everything is ok now!

NOTHING IS OK.

The episode starts with a little throw back to Season 1. In a new scene, Walter and Jesse are out in the desert cooking, when Walter makes a phone call to Skyler explaining why he’ll be late home. During the conversation, Skyler suggests the name Holly for their unborn daughter, and they both agree on it. Walter walks out of shot, leaving us with the RV in the desert.

But the RV fades away, and we go from happy days to our worst nightmares, the moment we had been dreading since last week. Hank’s been shot in the leg and he’s out of ammo. Steve Gomez is dead (Told you so). Crawling to grab Steve’s shotgun, Hank is caught by the Nazis. As they search around for Jesse (Who went missing during the shootout), Jack holds Hank at gun point, and finds out he’s D.E.A. Walter jumps out of the car, begging him not to kill him. He first tries to get Hank to agree not to bring in the Feds, which he denies. He then offers Jack all $80 million of his riches, as long as he’ll live. But then Hank delivers a line that destroyed me:

“Walter, you are the smartest person I ever met, and you’re too stupid to see he made up his mind 10 minutes ago”
Picture
And before he can even finish his sentence, BANG. Bullet to the head. Walt lays down in utter grief as the Nazis load up Walt’s money. As they prepare to leave, Walt reminds them that they still needs to kill Jesse, whom they find hiding underneath a car. Preparing to take his life, Todd reminds them that he was working with the Feds and may need to know whatever he told them. As they drag him away, Walter tells Jesse that he watched Jane die, and decided to do nothing about it.

Picture
Marie heads over to the car wash and tells Skyler that Hank has caught Walt, and the pair of them tell Walt Jr. who struggles to accept the news. Arriving home, Walter has packed all their bags and wants to get them out, still giving no explanations. When he can’t provide a solid answer as to where Hank is, Skyler is convinced he killed him. She pulls a knife on him, telling him to get away. The two end up in a fight over the knife, which Jr. ends and then calls the police, opting Walt to get out of the house, taking Holly with him. Skyler chases him down the street but ends up on her knees.

We meet Jesse again, locked up in a cell; battered, bruised and handcuffed. Todd brings him out and into a warehouse, and attaches him to a harness (Think Hannibal in Red Dragon), forcing him to cook Meth.

Picture
Walter calls Skyler when the police arrive at the home. Walter goes on an angry rant, telling her that she never should’ve crossed him or she’ll end up like Hank. Of course, Walt knows the police are listening, and Skyler realises he’s just saying things he doesn’t mean so that they don’t pin any blame on him. He leaves Holly at a fire station, and gets into the car of Saul’s mystery friend, the one who can give him a new life.

I think that was possibly the best episode of Breaking Bad ever. Hell, one of the best hours of TV ever! The tension was unbearable, and watching Hank die was absolutely painful. I’ve never really been a fan of Marie but I felt so sorry for her.

Picture
If you already hated Walt, you probably wanted him dead after what he said to Jesse. Even I wanted him dead. It was downright despicable. But, what he did for Skyler showed that maybe he’s still got some good in him. After all, he started all this for his family and he certainly wasn’t going to let them be dragged down with him. But the look on his face as he sees Walt Jr. and Skyler on the floor after the fight, and just says “For God’s sake, we’re a family!.....We’re family” Oh, the pain. Everything he risked his life for, broke the law for, and tried to protect is now in ruins. His brother in law is dead because of him. The world of Walter White is crumbling around him.

Oh, and I was wrong; Jesse isn’t dead! But even worse; he’s not a puppet for the Nazis. How on Earth is he going to get out of this one? He’s chained to the ceiling like a dog. There’s no escape. But hey, I was right about Gomez. Not exactly happy about that fact to be honest, he was pretty cool character. But as I said in my last review, the only character who was safe was Walter; there was always a chance Hank would kick it. And the way he did it was too much to handle. I’d like to congratulate Dean Norris on the amazing work he’s done on this show, especially in this last season, surely earning himself an Emmy nomination.

2 episodes left and it’s all over. I couldn’t even begin to predict where this is going. All I know is that there is no light at the end of the tunnel; we’ve seen Walt a year from now, full head of hair, returning to his house which is in ruins with Heisenberg written across the wall as he retrieves the hidden Risin. But we know he has a new identity now. Will his story stay separate from everyone else? Who gave him the gun in the car? All these questions will be answered in the next 2 weeks, but right now let me say that this was an absolutely amazing episode, and as the end grows closer, we realise that there is no happy ending for anyone.

2 episodes until the end!
