If you've been keeping updated with all things Westeros in the last month you'll remember that Telltale Games are turning their not inconsiderable talent to current fantasy behemoth, Game of Thrones. The digital world of Westeros will be delivered, as we might expect, in an episodic form, and like The Walking Dead will run concurrently with the the television show that is now in its fourth series. By Carla Hodge As much as we all love it, gaming suffers from a bit of an image problem. And not in the 'it's just a thing for men who don't grow up' kind of way. More of a physical way, if you will. Idealized bodies are all over the virtual landscape, and occasionally it goes, well, a bit too far and into downright unnecessarily sexy. There's a time and a place, if you will. So in case you're having a bad self-esteem day and don't need to see too-sexy bodies and moments in your digital media, here's a quick run down of some characters and moments (though definitely not all) who took it a bit too far. Fair warning: it gets a little NSFW up ahead. By Carla Hodge Well, the making-a-movie-based-on-a-video-game gauntlet has been picked up again, having been grasped and hastily dropped a number of times over the last two decades or so. The next game up for a celluloid makeover is World of Warcraft, directed by Duncan Jones (previously of Source Code and Moon, which have both been nominated for actual awards), and starring Paula Patton, Travis Fimmel, and Dominic Cooper amongst others. Empire magazine has even managed to secure some screenshots. by Ben Mapp, Josh Crooks, William John, Luke Kirby, Carla Hodge and Paul Robert Scott Having a franchise as large and genre spanning as Star Wars has led to some incredible video games to come out of the Star Wars cannon. Here we list our personal fav's in the hope of giving you the reader something good to play on this most geeky holiday. May the forth be with you! by Carla Hodge Our little monochrome friend is 25 years old today. In that quarter century, it has sold almost 119 million units; that's more Game Boys than there are people in the UK, and by a significant margin. And, as an extra for maths fans, there have been 30 million copies of Tetris sold. For a game all about falling blocks, that's pretty good going. So in honour of the little console that could, here are some (but definitely not all) of it best moments: by Carla Hodge Sad news today as Ken Levine announced that the studio responsible for the BioShock series will be significantly reducing its workforce, and concentrating on 'narrative-driven games for the core gamer'. Irrational is due to be closed down, in its current form, after the last Infinite DLC is released. In a statement on the Irrational website, Levine paid tribute to the 'some of the best game developers in the world', and admitted whilst there was 'no great way to lay people off', his passion had turned to 'making a different kind of game'. There's no indication as yet what the new material might be, but it will only be distributed digitally and will be published by Take-Two Interactive, who also published BioShock Infinite and its associated DLC. The closing of the studio won't mean the end of the BioShock universe as 2K are taking over the IP. by Carla Hodge Over the years, there have been many, many leading ladies and gents fronting video games. Some of their characteristics make them ideal for super heroics. Like ninjas. Ninjas are fricken ninjas, of course they can save the world if they need to. There's non-human types confronting evil and kicking ass all over the place, too: there's loads of representatives from the animal kingdom with pointy fangs, sharp claws, or flying abilities that naturally give them an edge over their foes. There's other characters, though, who don't obviously have much going in their favour... 1. The humble worm The trusty annelid has turned out to be quite good for fronting video games; the Worms series and Earthworm Jim will forever be remembered for being a raucous good time. By Carla Hodge So it's that time in the calendar when industries large and small get together and tell each other just how ruddy great they are, and videogaming is no different. The British Academy of Film and Television Awards has its own gaming-dedicated ceremony, and nominations have just been announced. 2013 was quite the year for interactive entertainment, so the field is strong and competitive. By Carla Hodge The first DLC pack for Call of Duty: Ghosts, Onslaught, is coming at the end of January for Xbox Live players (sorry, other platforms, no news on your release date yet). While the game may be a bit of a repeat (large understatement noted) this DLC pack sounds...different to say the least. |
