Console wars-The figures are in

As most of you probably already know it's here, the big one. The two biggest consoles have hit the shelves at last and the sale numbers have arrived. And so the battle truly begins.

Sony's next work of art
After a fast-selling performance in the US and Canada, the PS4 has become the fastest-selling console ever in the UK. Whilst exact numbers haven't been released yet, the number of units sold appears to be just under 250,000 within the first 48 hours, which outperforms recent PSP and Wii U launches by miles. Worldwide the PS4 is looking very good (in 32 countries no less) and since the North American debut on November 15th, Sony has shifted 2.1 million new consoles. Andrew House, the President and Group CEO of SCE took to a blog post to thank dedicated fans, and has promised to 'introduce valuable new features and services...in the months and years ahead'. Whilst nothing is certain this early on compare this with all the exclusives we'll be seeing (InFamous: Second Son, Killzone: Shadowfall and The Order: 1886) the PS4 is looking like a very strong contender.

Microsoft's latest creation
In the other corner is the Goliath, Microsoft's X-Box One. While Microsoft haven't released any actual figures as of yet, a survey carried out by InfoScout revealed that the X-Box One has sold twice as many copies on Black Friday than the PS4. While this may sound like the X-Box One has already one, this is only on Black Friday when the prices are massively reduced, and let's face it, who'd be mad enough to pay the full price for the X-Box One anyway? On it's first 48 hour debut the console sold 150,000 units, 100,000 behind its rival. And one thing it is besting the PS4 in is the amount of units the X-Box One has, as PS4 is already struggling to meet demands. Either way its looking to be close, with X-Box One retaliating with exclusives which include its titular Halo series and the newly exclusive Dead Rising franchise.

Overall it's a strong performance from both of the console giants as they truly begin to clash. Whether we'll see Wii-style shortages in the run up to Christmas remains to be seen. But all in all: Who actually cares?
