Last month I took a look at how the first computing pioneers of the Forties and Fifties inadvertently laid the initial groundwork in creating the first computer games. While crude, and based on already existing parlour and board games, these research tools helped the first computer scientists to explore the possibilities of artificial intelligence and helped to define the limits of intelligence for the computers of the day. Meanwhile, computers were already undergoing the constant and relentless process of getting faster and more powerful, providing the hardware needed to create the first true 'Video Game'.

Remastered! - Returning to the Classics

Recently a number of games have received a bit of an upgrade for the next gen consoles. With remastered editions of Tomb Raider and The Last of Us now available, and looking better than ever, it seems a good time to consider other possible games that ought to be given a little tender loving care.

In 1972 Pong was released upon the world. To many this simple, yet addictive game represents the primordial ooze that all succeeding computer games stem from. But while Pong may have brought this new form of media to the attention of the public and helped spawn everything from Mario to Master Chief, it is not the beginning of the story for gaming.

People have very different views on the 1990’s. Some remember it with the kind of fondness that you can only get from growing up in a more optimistic age, while others cringe at the very thought of Brit-pop and curtained hair. Personally I prefer to think of the nineties as a ten-year, acid-fuelled rave; where everyone got so drunk they were no longer responsible for their own actions. However for all of the things we’d rather forget or chalk up to the intemperance of a ten-year millennium party, you have to admit that it was a fantastic age for gaming.

So the excitement of E3 is over for another year, and we took the opportunity to ask some of our writers what they thought of the recent conferences and if there was a clear winner this year. Despite the differing opinions, everyone seems to be in agreement that EA's conference just blatantly sucked.
