Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain - Trailer Analysis

3/30/2013

Earlier this week, Hideo Kojima took to the stage at GDC and announced that Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain was real and would be coming to our (most likely) next gen consoles at some point in the future. He also had a very pretty trailer to show everyone.

If you haven’t seen it yet (for shame!) here it is, take a look below.

5 Reasons Why Link is a Terrible Hero

3/23/2013

Picture
By Tom Sams

In The Legend of Zelda gaming universe, Link is portrayed as the Hero of Time, Light and possibly something involving cutting grass, because those years of training under countless masters and dead heroes would only go to waste if Link didn’t mow the lawn with his sword. Although Link does save the day on countless occasions, he still wreaks havoc and ruins people’s lives on the way. Don’t get me wrong, he is a hero, but he’s a terrible one at that, and now I’m going to tell you why…

The Walking Dead Game, Series 2: What We'd Like to See

3/22/2013

Picture
By Graham Osborne

Last week Telltale Games announced that the second series of their acclaimed The Walking Dead game would be arriving some time this autumn. With that in mind, we thought it was time to discuss what we’d like to see happen in the next series based on what happened in the first game. I’ll try to keep spoilers to a minimum, but I can’t promise they won’t appear at all, so if you haven’t played the game yet, do that and then read this article. If you do it the other way around, you’re just ruining your experience of one of the BEST games from last year.

Saints Row 4 - A Geek's Wishlist

3/17/2013

If I could only have one multiple nerdgasm a year, I’m glad i was spent on the Saints Row franchise. While not giving anything away, the teaser trailer did just that. Perking my interest and building my excitement levels. Then came the kicker; coming August 2013! Cue the nerdgasm. Once the levels of pleasure had eased off, I began to think about it logically. Technically this isn’t Saints Row 4. What we’re getting was intended to be a DLC mini-game.

I’m fervently hoping that Deep Silver, who purchased the Saints Row franchise from ailing developers THQ earlier this year, spent a little time sprucing the title up before release. Here are just a few things on my wish-list that I hope make their way into the final game.

Tomb Raider (2013)

3/17/2013

By Josh Crooks

Having not been fully engrossed in a Tomb Raider game since the Year 2000 release of Tomb Raider Chronicles, it came as much of a shock to me as it appears to have done to others when I was presented with a polished, and engrossing new entry to the franchise.

The first sign of danger was that of the Fast and the Furious style name change that came along with the often dreaded idea of a reboot - not a positive sign (see: The Omen, The Day the Earth Stood Still and Total Recall etc.). Of course what I was forgetting that unlike the film industry, video games have taken far better to the retreading treatment, with games such as XCOM Enemy Unknown and DMC topping this years and last years 'Best of' lists respectively.

Arkham 3 Rumours & Predictions

So, they’ve announced the third instalment of the Arkham Games, not much of a shock really. But the announcement means that we can start speculating on what might turn up in the game and make a few predictions of our own. Let the fun begin.

Video Games that need Movie Adaptations #5 - Mafia: City of Lost Heaven (2002)

3/8/2013

Picture
By Jamie Kennett

It may be a slightly over-romanticised account of the Great Depression, but Mafia is one of my favourite games and for years has been at the top of my list of potential film adaptions. I even remember using the game’s prologue for the basis of a short story for some English coursework once. It’s essentially an interactive film, not in a Heavy Rain way, but in the way the game’s laid out. It’s presented in a series of chapters that possess all the facets of a great movie; it has the perfect balance of action, drama and character, all with enough room for the plot to develop into something marvellous.

Video Games that need Movie Adaptations #4 - Red Dead Redemption

3/7/2013

By Jamie Kennett

The last in my line of Rockstar Games productions, Red Dead Redemption is the classic tale of a reformed man going on an against-all-odds quest to right all his previous wrongs and set his former life to rest. Staged as a Western, against the staggeringly beautiful backdrop of the American southwest and northern Mexico, it’s set in the summer of 1911 as the Old West enters its death throes.

Antichamber

Until August of last year, I had been a student, which meant plenty of time to relax and play videogames at my leisure. Since then I’ve been in full-time work, which means every day I get in at about half seven and want to unwind, usually resulting in something I don’t really have to concentrate on to enjoy - such as Just Cause 2, where every landmark is cause for potential explosions, and who doesn’t love explosions?

On the weekends, it’s a different matter, and the last couple of weekends I have been testing myself with Antichamber, a new independent release on Steam from a lone developer who’s worked on this, his first release, since 2009.

The game opens in a black and white room, depositing the player in front of a wall with a cryptic message: “Every journey is a series of choices. The first is to begin the journey.”

Video Games that need Movie Adaptations #3 - Sleeping Dogs

3/6/2013

By Jamie Kennett

We all secretly agree that crime dramas make the best stories, so here’s my third choice with Sleeping Dogs.

The game is an undercover police drama uniquely infused with martial arts-based action. Set in modern-day Hong Kong, it tells the story of unorthodox detective Wei Shen as he attempts to infiltrate the notorious Sun On Yee triad (an organisation heavily based on the real-life Sun Yee On). Wei Shen is the classic anti-hero; he grew up amongst the very people who are now part of the organisation he’s investigating. He moved to San Francisco in his youth, and later joined the SFPD as an undercover police officer, infiltrating triad gangs on the West Coast. From there he transferred to Hong Kong, the centre of all the world’s triad activity, to investigate the organisations rife in the city.
