by Ben Mapp That is the question. The battle for the eighth generation of console gaming began in November 2012 with Nintendo’s entry, the Wii U (successor to their hugely popular Wii system). Having played the console myself (through my flatmate's console) I can verify that, although the console is designed for group gameplay, it is a worthy experience and certainly provides hours of fun just like other consoles. It also offers a unique type of immersion very different to any of its rivals. Nintendo have described this style of innovative gameplay as "asymetrical". by Ben Mapp Every once in a while a story comes along and just makes you smile. In 1983 a rumour was started that Atari had all of the unsold editions of their E.T. video game adaptation buried in the desert in an attempt to forget all about the game’s appalling reception and even more appalling sales. by Ben Mapp Dragon Age: Inquisition will be the third major instalment of the Dragon Age series which, if you didn’t know already, is Bioware’s gift to the fantasy genre. If that doesn’t mean a thing to you then let me explain. Bioware is a company which is known for pumping out very high-quality RPG’s every few years, the most notable of which I would argue are 2007’s Mass Effect and 2003’s Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. They designed Dragon Age to be a spiritual successor to their Baldur’s Gate series, much in the same way that Mass Effect was designed to further develop what they had learned during the production of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. by Carla Hodge Our little monochrome friend is 25 years old today. In that quarter century, it has sold almost 119 million units; that's more Game Boys than there are people in the UK, and by a significant margin. And, as an extra for maths fans, there have been 30 million copies of Tetris sold. For a game all about falling blocks, that's pretty good going. So in honour of the little console that could, here are some (but definitely not all) of it best moments: by Reece Merryweather-Brown Now, I’m not much for anime. In fact, Japanese culture as a whole sort of creeps me out. But when I picked up this little game for a mere tenner all of my prejudgements flew straight out the window. Based off the critically acclaimed anime of the same name Afro Samurai tells the story of Afro, the imaginatively named hero of the story, who is on a quest to become the Number One, and avenge his father’s death. And imagine my happiness when I learned that none other than Samuel L. freakin’ Jackson was a voice. How awesome is that? You take control of Afro, who is instantly recognisable by his comically large black…afro. Where do they come up with the names for these characters? By Reece Merryweather-Brown Well, April is upon us, bringing us such delights as April Fool’s Day, the Easter Holidays and my birthday (I know it’s not your birthday let me enjoy it! Unless it is, in which case HAPPY BIRTHDAY) But that’s not all this wondrous month is bringing us, so let’s look at the interactive digital treats that we’ve got in store for us (but namely me.) |
