There's no denying that 2014 was a fantastic year for gaming. Many things were brought to our attention, such as Ubisoft's apparent inability to hire competent beta testers and the fact that Sonic the Hedgehog turned 23 (and got another makeover), but overall it's been a fun ride. Here are some of our personal favourites.

By Paul Robert Scott GTA V has been getting a lot of press lately. First we had the next gen release with brand new graphics and first person mode, then we received word of the long awaited online heists and now there is the distinct possibility that we will see brand new DLC in the new year that will continue the story of Franklin Clinton. By Jamie Lambert RPG Maker is not only a program for creating games, but an engine that anyone can use and that many games are based around. Not necessarily RPGs either. There are hundreds upon hundreds of games developed from this engine, including adventure and survival horror experiences. A fairly large community has evolved around this style of play. Since the community hosts so many different games, I have narrowed down the top five recommendations. By Luke Kirby It’s taken them over a year but it’s finally happening. Rockstar have announced that in early 2015 the hotly anticipated online heists will be coming to GTA V and they’ve even given us a trailer showing the general gist of what to expect… So far, it’s everything I’ve wanted. The IWG Games Team Some say Volition have come along way from the lowly street developer they once were. Some say that instead of living in the shadow of Grand Theft Auto, they transformed the world of Saints Row into something unique and truly beautiful. Those of you who can proudly count yourselves as Saints will know that next month sees the rerelease of last year's epic, climactic chapter of the series which changed all the rules. By Ben Mapp Let’s be honest. If there’s one thing J.K. Rowling doesn’t need more of, it’s money. But that’s not going to stop her from making more millions from the upcoming cinematic adaptation of the book within a book, Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them. It’s no secret that the Harry Potter franchise has been a conquering success ever since it began way back in 1997, and I am almost certain that old J.K. is considering all sorts of ways to continue it on a popular medium now that both her seven novels, as well as the eight films, have reached their natural ends. By Paul Robert Scott There have been some fairly maniacal villains in gaming's history. Their goals can often differ and their methods can range from overtly simple to impossibly convoluted, but on the whole they will all share the fact that they are just a big, bad bag full of crazy, and none to my mind are more so than the antagonist in Lucasarts classic; Day of the Tentacle. By Reece Merryweather-Brown The 7th of December, 2014 was an incredibly sad, sad day for gamers everywhere. Ralph Baer, widely regarded as the father of video games, sadly passed away at the ripe old age of 92. An inventor by nature, Baer owned over 150 patents but perhaps his most famous work was his key input into the design of the Magnavox Odyssey, the world’s first home entertainment console. It’s widely seen to be the predecessor of, well pretty much everything, from the early NES’ and Commodore 64s, to the new-fangled pieces of tech like the PS4 or Steam Machine. By Luke Kirby Last week Telltale Games released their take on the, ever-growing, popular HBO fantasy epic Game of Thrones. Their debut episode, Iron from Ice, is the first of six and a thrilling addition to this universe. For those unaware of the Telltale style the game centers mainly around more conversational, more retro point-and-click (and the occasional quick time event) gameplay to allow you to progress throughout the narrative - beautifully contrasting the vast interactive nature of most modern video games. By Ben Mapp If you didn’t know already, this month’s free game on PS Plus (at least for PS4 owners) is the critically-lauded superhero fighting game, Injustice: Gods Among Us. I thought I should spend ten minutes on it to see what all of the fuss was about. I mean it is free after all. And after few consecutive hours (and a completed Story Mode) later, and I finally realise why so many people have tipped their hats to the developers of this game. I mean as an avid gamer, but one not so infatuated with fighting games, I was surprised at just how much I was woo’d by the main campaign of Injustice. |
