Microsoft created some controversial waves last month when they announced that Rise of the Tomb Raider would be a 'holiday exclusive' for Xbox One when it releases in Christmas 2015. At first the announcement received a mixed reaction, but eventually the company gave in and revealed that the exclusivity of the title was timed (and that the game would eventually see the expected multiple platform release). That puts Microsoft toe-to-toe with Sony once again, only Sony have Uncharted 4: A Thief's End in the wings, which is a complete exclusive (since Sony owns the developer Naughty Dog). So to get ahead, Microsoft certainly need to get some more exclusives. Halo and Gears of War simply won't cut it anymore.

So great in fact that it's taken us this long to play through everything and make up our minds as to what were our favourites. I'll take the reins first I think! Fortunately I think I've finally figured out what mine were. although the competition was very high. So without any more ado, here are my top five gaming triumphs from last year. By Luke Kirby As I sat here and look at my current setup I have my Wii U, PS4 and beneath both of them is the beast that is my gaming PC. Honestly, it’s my favourite platform to game on. I’m going to list my reasons why I believe it trumps the console counterparts. I also promise to try and avoid a “PC Master Race” standpoint. So let's take a look at the glorious world of PC gaming! By John Philip Jennings Over the past decade there has been one particular genre that has repeatedly dominated the gaming charts. In fact, it can even be claimed that the first-person shooter has defined the previous generation of consoles. As your usually silent protagonist cuts through hordes of enemies with automatic firearm, the genre's success has seen it remain steadfast in the ongoing console war. The IWG Games Team Last week we asked you to narrow down just one of your favourite characters from gaming, and whilst it's certainly not easy to settle on just one character out of a whole managerie, you attempted it anyway! We singled some of the most interesting. Only ten made the cut! Did yours? By Daniel Lamb In the beginning, there was Hironobu Sakaguchi. And he said, ‘Let there be Light Warriors!’ And thus began one of the most critically acclaimed, influential, and best-selling video game franchises of all time. The beginning in this case was 1987, the year that the very first Final Fantasy game was released for the Nintendo Entertainment System. It is no exaggeration to say that gaming would never be the same again. Spanning generations, consoles, and a host of fantastical worlds, the story of Final Fantasy and its remarkable evolution is a story well worth recounting. By Reece Merryweather-Brown You’ve done quite a lot in your time in Los Santos and the surrounding Blaine County. You’ve thwarted and committed various muggings, murders and robberies. You’ve purchased vehicle upon vehicle and you’ve got as much ammo as you can carry for every weapon. By John Philip Jennings and Ben Mapp Where is this franchise going to take us next? Before I begin to divulge on the possibilities, let's take a brief look at the settings we've visited so far. For those off you who haven't yet played a Bioshock game, I highly recommend you go pick up yourself a copy of the first game and give it a play because you're missing out on what could be a vital part of your life. By Paul Robert Scott Hello. I’m the Doctor. Well… OK. I’m not. But I really wish I was. I can actually class it as a major ambition of mine. I dress somewhat eccentrically with scarves and cravats, I have a tendency to wave my hands about when I speak and I don’t like screwdrivers that aren’t sonic. By Ginny Ratcliffe Before delving into an incoherent attempt at explaining ‘THE DEFINITION OF ART’ we must first establish what kind of art it is that is being discussed. All games are art. That’s a given. Each one has been graphically designed – conceptualized, storyboarded. What defines art therefore depends upon perception. |
