When it comes to online gaming… honestly I don’t play too many. I used to dabble with Battlefield 3 a bit and I’ve played Battlefield 4 too, which is sometimes rather enjoyable but as with any online FPS/combat games I get bored quite easily.
A few months ago I purchased Chivalry: Medieval Warfare through Steam for a ridiculous price of £3.74. I thought for that price it was more than worth it (note that Chivalry is only available for the glorious PC master race.) (Ed: So, how did you enjoy The Last of Us? Or Red Dead Redemption? GTA V? Oh right, yeah)
Turns out it was the best thing in the history of my life that I’ve ever bought for under £4.
A lot of the combat comes down to timing, especially in a one and one fight between players, so there’s a nice element of skill in this game that I don’t necessarily find apparent with games like Battlefield 4 where you can die pretty much immediately after spawning from a gunshot across the map.
What I really enjoy about the game is that it is able to build up this feeling that you know an epic battle is about to happen. Bearing in mind there can be up to 64 players, you spawn and come over a hill to see your enemy charging towards you and releasing as many arrows as possible until the time comes to switch to you sword and meet your foe.
When these clashes of swords ensue it is pure chaos. Enemies all around swinging their weapons, often without thought for their fellow knights, teammates are being dismembered, heads rolling. To sum it up it’s pretty brutal but it’s just so much fun at the same time. The game includes a variety of modes; Free for all, Duel, Team Death Match, Last Team Standing, King of the Hill, Capture the Flag and Team Objective. My two favourite being Team Death Match and Team Objective.
While it’s not something really important to the game, I will mention that it’s a pretty good looking game. I must admit nice aesthetics are a little bonus to the overall experience when decapitating players.
Each class has their own strengths and weaknesses, for example the ninjas are the quickest and most agile faction with their own unique ability to perform a rolling action to dodge enemy attacks however they also have the lowest armour rating meaning that if they’re caught with a slash of a long sword it will deal significant damage. Or pirates who are able to use one shot pistols and use their battle cry to restore some health, but the most important aspect about the pirates is that when they run… they run like Captain Jack Sparrow which I must admit is quite amusing.
Each class also have their own personalised unlocks which adds a nice feature of trying to do well so you can get a new sword with a better reach allowing the player to alter their playing habits based on their chosen arsenal. While it is mainly swinging swords, some thought into what weapon you wish to use can be very helpful on the battlefield.
One other thing I’m really glad was added to the DLC is the assist reward, meaning that even if someone else gets the decapitating blow you’re still rewarded for the effort you put in... Meaning that you won’t be swearing from someone stealing your kill with a cheeky bow and arrow shot.
I really do recommend this game for anyone who enjoys online action based games; even if you haven’t played a game like this I still think you should give it a go. I will say wait for deals, such as the Steam Christmas sale, as you can pick up Medieval Warfare for a good price. I doubt that the DLC will drop too dramatically in price but I was more than happy to pay £11.99 for it.
One last thing I will say is that if anyone is interested in the DLC be aware that it only runs on a 64 bit OS. This makes not one bit of sense to me as Chivalry: Medieval Warfare runs perfectly fine on a 32 bit OS.
