With so much focus put on the Xbox One and PS4 over the last year, it is easy to forget that Nintendo brought out their new console long before them. Now, with the Wii U almost two years old, how does it stack up to its competitors, and is it a console worth buying? Personally I'm all for saying an emphatic 'yes'! I’ll go ahead and tell you just a few of the biggest reasons below.
Now however, the Wii U has quite a decent catalogue behind it. Combine this with the all the games available on the e-shop and there are plenty of games for people to spend their time on.
Exclusive titles such as; The Legend of Zelda Wind Waker HD, The Wonderful 101, Nintendo Land, New Super Mario Bros U, Pikmin 3, Super Mario 3D World, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Mario Kart 8 and... I can’t be bothered to list the rest; but as I said there is a fair number of exclusives for the system. As well as multi-platform games such as Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Rayman Legends being at their most enjoyable on the Wii U.
Not only that, but if you’re feeling a bit nostalgic and want to play some classic Nintendo games that you never got the chance to in the past then you can always make a quick stop to the e-shop with some of the best games made by Nintendo for the NES, Super Nintendo & GBA.
Wii U gamers also have the Miiverse; a very friendly and cheerful community which is quite easy to get involved with simply because everyone is pretty damn nice and positive. Also some of the hand written posts by individuals depicting images of some of Nintendo’s best characters are just amazing. While it certainly is a unique, and rather kooky, community it’s one that is enjoyable to be a part of, unlike the occasional pains of the Xbox live township.
Now I’ll admit I had to get used to it at first, it was quite peculiar and didn’t feel natural to use simply because it was a new experience. However it feels comfortable and all the buttons are mapped out perfectly.
If you’ll recall I mentioned two, multi-platform, games that I believe are best on the Wii U and the gamepad is the reason. With Deus Ex: Human Revolution the gamepad serves as your map, organising inventory, upgrading augmentations and it just feels natural to have this second screen to serve that function. Again with Rayman Legends after playing on the Wii U it just feels weird when playing on other platforms simply because of how well the gamepad is integrated into the game.
Another fantastic aspect about the gamepad is that it makes the Wii U a portable system, in a way. Admittedly I didn’t think I’d play much while just using the gamepad as my main screen, but sometimes when I just want a quick few games of Mario Kart 8 I’ll just play a grand prix without the TV on. Or, for example, when I’ve stayed at my dad’s and there is no available TV for me to play on I’ll just plug the Wii U into any power supply, sit on the sofa and happily waste several hours while the rest of the family get to watch whatever they fancy.
Maybe I’m a bit of fan boy but I love Nintendo, I’ve never been disappointed with any of their consoles and the Wii U is no exception. If you don’t own one you should change that sometime soon, otherwise you’ll regret missing out on an amazing system.
Are Wii U?
Nintendo may not be winning the console war but we still think they've created a pretty solid console.
