We have recently seen a plethora of announcements from Nintendo; partnering up with DeNA to make mobile games as well a new online membership service and, of course, their new piece of dedicated hardware codenamed “NX”. There still isn’t much information on the new hardware; we know that more information will be made available from Nintendo sometime next year.
While this by no means offers much in the way of what Nintendo have in mind for “surprising” customers we can speculate what route they might go down. The NX is part of Nintendo’s plan for a new membership service encompassing smart devices and dedicated video game systems. My uncle and I spoke about how Nintendo could utilise smartphones, tablets and PCs in terms of gaming and he came with the idea that Nintendo could make controller that allows you to play Nintendo games on various devices. We then went from there discussing that essentially that’s all Nintendo would need to do, then they could make optimised games for smartphones, tablets and PCs. The controller would act as some form of security too meaning that if someone wanted to play Nintendo games on their device the only way would be by the controller that gives access to whatever games a consumer has on their device.
This idea, coupled with the image above (while it’s not much to go on), makes some sense, though the only issue is that I’m not sure what was discussed could be classified as a “dedicated game system”, as it would encompass all these devices and given that the 3DS and Wii U is still part of the diagram it (to me at least) seems plausible. As Nintendo stated the mobile games they’re making aren’t simple ports but essentially exclusives for mobile devices meaning anything made would be separate from the Wii U and, in particular, 3DS.
