Back in 2013, a user on NeoGaf by the name of Mama Robotnik leaked a series of documents showing evidence that a new Legacy of Kain single player game had been in development at Climax Studios under supervision from Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics (with the latter in a more advisory role).
Dead Sun would have featured a new protagonist with a combination of human and vampiric strengths and weaknesses, and would have been set in the future land of Nosgoth (years beyond the broken world which appeared in Soul Reaver: Legacy of Kain). Nosgoth would have been healing as a result of the time-altering events of the previous games, and would have seen the return of the more elegantly looking vampires (as opposed to the brainless monsters they became), and a growing population of humans in towns and villages. Whilst Defiance saw Raziel's storyline brought to a close, this game would have potentially brought back various other familiar characters from across the series, such as the Elder God (who was said to have a pivotal role in the story) and - of course - Kain himself.
Dead Sun would have continued the storyline, although distantly, and served as a reboot for newcomers to the series. The game was described by those who worked on it as 'if HBO did Zelda' and was said to take influence from several open-world RPG's, with Soul Reaver itself being its most major inspiration. Mama Robotnik has provided a half-an-hour snippet of gameplay from the cancelled project, which you can view here:
Mama reports that Square Enix failed to inform developers at Climax Studios that they had cancelled the game's release, meaning that many of their employees came in to work on a project that would ultimately never come out. More information on the game, specifically on its gameplay and setting, can be found on NeoGaf here. The gameplay looked to feature a combination of styles, many reminiscent of Soul Reaver, Nosgoth, Assassin's Creed and even Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor. Three of which sold very well commercially. Square Enix have since confirmed that the game will never see the light of day, but Nosgoth (for PC) is bringing new players to the series and creating interest. Also, with the amount of attention the leaks of Dead Sun received upon their reveal, it is likely that the company is considering moving forward on a new single-player adventure set in the Legacy of Kain universe. Square Enix have already proven that they can successfully reboot a franchise for a modern audience (2013's Tomb Raider being a top example), and the dark gothic world of this series certainly fits into their vast catalog of fantasy games.
Or maybe we're just getting our hopes up.
Come on, Square Enix. You could be sitting on a goldmine here!
