Today Ubisoft released the third patch for Assassin's Creed: Unity, the launch of which had been plagued with various graphical issues and gameplay bugs (particularly the PC version). The glitches affected the reviews, leaving Unity to have the most mixed reception of any Assassin's Creed game to date. The average scores also affected the game's sales, and earned Ubisoft a reputation amongst gamers that they were 'becoming the new EA.'
The game's visual glitches have been shared across the internet and have added to the game's growingly infamous reputation. Such include the 'no face' glitch where, during cutscenes, Arno and other characters lose their facial textures - creating a horrific, distorted (and a little but amusing) face animations. Other common bugs include the protagonist falling through the streets of Paris, frame-rate issues (which have always been present in the Assassin's Creed series), characters falling and becoming trapped in bizarre poses, etc. Players have speculated that the unfinished state of the game upon its release may be due to Ubisoft not properly using Beta testers during development. The game also features an array of matchmaking glitches, which made it all the more difficult for players to play online co-op with their friends. This feature was heavily advertised as part of Unity's ongoing marketing campaign, being the first in the Assassin's Creed series to incorporate story-based co-op multiplayer.
All in all, Ubisoft have admitted that this new third patch for the game includes 'over 300 fixes.' In his apology, Mallat states that to make up for the disastrous launch of Unity - Ubisoft will now be releasing the upcoming DLC, entitled Dead Kings, to everyone to download for free. He also mentions that Season Pass holders will also be entitled to an additional game for their trouble. Mallat also promises that further patches will be continued to be worked on in order for players to the enjoy the 'full Unity experience.'
Dead Kings will be set after the main story of Unity, featuring Arno on a mission in the city of Saint-Denis and will include new characters and weaponry. It will most likely be released either near or after Christmas.
Just don't do it again, Ubisoft...
Here at IWG we believe that the release of free story-based DLC can never not be a good thing, and in his apology Mallat acknowledges that mistakes were made, trying hard to steer the reputation of Ubisoft and the Assassin's Creed development team(s) back onto calmer seas. At least for now.Do you think this will affect the franchise in the long run? Did you play the glitched-up version of Unity? Let us know in the comments below!
