Thoughts on The Walking Dead Season Two (Spoiler-free!)

As the title of this article suggests there will be no spoilers when it comes to my thoughts of Telltale’s Games The Walking Dead Season Two, but before I do say anything and if (for some reason) you’re yet to play or complete the first season go away and do that now because the ending for Season One will be spoiler for you otherwise.

Right, so you’ve played it? Had your fair share of feels? Good, we shall move on. Following the events that unfolded in the first season of The Walking Dead we’ve shifted, from Lee, to Clementine as our main protagonist. Now naturally this isn’t the same Clementine we knew and experienced from the first season, she’s had to grow and become independent in the harsh world she inhabits without Lee to guide her.

I feel I had a certain mentality going into the second season of Clementine being my only priority which was an affect from the first season. When I was playing as Lee my main focus was making sure that the decisions made best suited Clementine and Lee respectively as she was someone who needed protection. Starting the second season I felt that pretty much everyone else is irrelevant and my only concern was making sure Clementine, again, was safe and all decisions were based around her well-being. This changed once I was introduced to other survivors in the game, some likeable (others not so much) but I was drawn into these characters and their quirks wanting to be a part of this group. This is one of the aspects Telltale are great at doing, there are some characters you like (sometimes immediately) others you loathe with passion (mostly always instantly) but you always feel something towards them, there’s never a particular indifference to a character because you converse with them and find out what their traits are, whether they’re selfish or put the needs of the group, are they calm under pressure or do they break easily which (to me) changes my attitude towards individuals.

I find that your thoughts towards a character can change based off of a sentence as they sometimes reveal their true colours which can leave you disappointed or your reasons for hating this individual is perfectly justified.

Asides from character development Telltale does, of course, have a knack for telling a story. Quite like the first season there’s a lot going on and quite often you’re looking at your screen like a slack jawed idiot because you have no idea how to deal with situations or know what decision to make. Often they can be a gut decision but there were also moments of pure uncertainty with your decisions essentially being the better of some awful choices. Obviously as this is spoiler free discussing the story is a no go but I will say I found it enjoyable. I have seen reviews of episodes arguing that parts felt slow or particular points in the game weren’t given as much depth as they should have. The latter I’ll partially agree with yet every episode (to me) had the right pace, at roughly an hour-and-a-half to two-and-a-half hours per episode there’s only so much that you can fit in. Sure there would be moments that are frantic, just like parts in the first season, but moments where calmer atmospheres were present allowed for character development and honestly made those moments where everything kicked off more exhilarating because of the contrast. Not that the plot to the story is a complicated one, in a post-apocalyptic world the game is survival but of course it’s yours choices and decisions that can affect who lives and dies.

My thoughts are limited when it comes to expressing how much I enjoyed Season Two of The Walking Dead and I definitely argue for those who haven’t played the series to get their hands on the first season and start. If you’ve already played the first season but yet to play and complete I’ll be confused why you haven’t. Fans of the first season will be able to get their teeth sunk into the emotional journey that is The Walking Dead Season Two.

Fear the Living. Fight the Dead.

This is over all another triumph for Telltales and we look forward to the potential Season Three. This season has also geared us up to try out their take on the Game of Thrones mythos when their game adaptation emerges from the shadows next year.
