The Readership - Your favourite boss fights

The IWG Games Team

Here at IWG, we love to talk. But sometimes we get sick of the sound of our own voices. Sometimes, variation is required. That's where you lot come in! The time has come once again. We have tallied up the best submissions from far and wide.

Here are your favourite boss fights in gaming!

Arthas Menethil
World of Warcraft

Picture
'Picking a favorite Boss is like asking me to pick my favorite book or TV show. There are so many great ones, that I have trouble choosing. Ultimately, I chose Arthas because as an avid World of Warcraft player, I can appreciate just how hard of a boss he was. Arthas was the first real WoW villain I ever got to go against. I will never forget my first time walking into the Ice Crown Citadel. I was so excited to finally take down Arthas. But that excitement was short lived. My hunter was fully geared and I was sure I could handle whatever he threw at me. Arthas killed us all in a matter of seconds. It was months before we downed him, to this date he is still one of the hardest bosses in WoW.' -  Amanda Feldman

Arthas Menethil, also known as the titular Lich King (from the popular World of Warcraft expansion Wrath of the Lich King), can be found and fought in the Icecrown Citadel.

Baby Bowser
Yoshi's Island

Picture
'It’s the first time in-a-billionth that Mario and Bowser have faced each other so the anticipation is spine-tingling in its own way. It’s hilarious awakening Baby Bowser who dismissively squashes Kamek (the main antagonist until now) He has a tantrum and demands to ride ‘the gween donkey’. Once you’ve defeated the erratically stomping baby, Kamek pours some screen-filling magic dust on him and then the real battle begins! Bowser turns into a Godzilla-sized monstrosity who roars closer each time you strike him with a giant egg, obliterating more of the ground beneath Yoshi. This boss encounter perfectly integrates the platforming and egg-assaulting skills you’ve mastered over the course of the game and is the most epic way to close the SNES era.' - Daniel Mapp

Yoshi's Island was released in 1995 as a prequel to the events of the previous games, despite being sold as Super Mario World 2 upon its release. A sequel, Yoshi's Island DS, was released just over a decade later in 2006.

Damien Brenks
Watch_Dogs

Picture
'It wasn't just one of them spur of the moment bosses, he was once a friend, and you work against him the whole way through the game, and he wasn't the easiest to beat either! He was constantly moving around, you had to do all kinds of tasks to get to him and he didn't have any weaknesses. As well as the fact that he constantly reminisces about the past events (and blaming you for them)...' - Henry Marshall

Watch_Dogs was released earlier this year to a mixed reception, as gamers complained that (particularly the last gen console versions) that the game had been intentionally 'downgraded' by its developers, in order to promote next gen sales.

J.E.N.O.V.A
Final Fantasy VII

Picture
'Birth, Life, Death, Synthesis

She's so badass, lopping off her head just doesn't cut it. Every cell in her body manifests itself to curb your journey at every crossroads only to find that when you do finally catch up with that silver haired psychopath, Yup! It's her again just wearing a Sephiroth suit. The lengths this extra-terrestrial mother would go to just to throw her deranged, baby-boy the smash reunion he could only dream of. Plus I could just spend hours listening to her battle tune, it's so awesome! Her memetic legacy lives on!' -
James Salt

Final Fantasy VII
remains, as always, a game which needs no introduction. Fans still pine over a potential HD release.

Mundus’s Spawn
DmC: Devil May Cry

Picture
'Mostly because it’s the most twisted, messed up boss I’ve ever seen. You start off at a cut scene having a delightful little chat with Mundus’s girlfriend, who is pregnant with his freaky demon baby. Then her head explodes and a giant foetus emerges, and DAMN is it ugly! Random little arms popping out and even a third eye! And the periodic event of his mother popping out of its stomach attached by the head via an umbilical cord and then getting sucked back in. The sheer concept is so weird and freaky, I love it!' - Claire Saunders

DmC: Devil May Cry was developed as a reboot of the Devil May Cry series in an effort to make the game more appealing to a westernised audience, despite the good sales of the previous installments.

Psycho Mantis
Metal Gear Solid

Picture
'Psycho Mantis still stands out as one of the most memorable boss battles, which is saying something in a game that pits you against a raven-wielding war monger in a tank, a giant nuclear warhead mech, and a sniper who can hit you from a range that hasn't even been rendered yet. An intelligent use of breaking the fourth wall foreshadowed generations of intelligent boss battles, and although it's yet to be fully built upon (a boss that reads your Facebook details and uses your personal drama against you) it showed an ingenuity in game design not yet seen.' - Patrick Francis Bonsu

Metal Gear Solid established the stealth genre after building on elements introduced in the previous two games, Metal Gear and its sequel. The latest in the series, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, will be released early next year.

Raziel/Kain
Legacy of Kain: Defiance

Picture
'My vote is for the Raziel/Kain boss fight from LoK:Defiance. It’s an important moment in a series of games that I had invested a lot of time and effort into. The cinematics are clever and the lead into the fight is smart too. The fact that it is like a father/son battle is immense. The interspersed cut scene is very clever and the way that you have to play both characters against the other is a masterstroke of gameplay and storytelling dynamic that adds interest to a game which neatly tops an exceptional series. This is a boss fight that will live with you a long time if you, like I have invested the time to get to know Kain and Raziel over the previous four games.' - Mike O'Connor

Legacy of Kain: Defiance was released in 2003 and resolved much of Raziel's storyline but left much of the plot hanging. More recently, the series was revived by Square Enix with Nosgoth, a multiplayer battle game, which pitches vampires against humans. The game is canon, but is not story-driven.

Zant
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

Picture
'My favourite boss from a video game is Zant from The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. What makes him stand out from the other bosses in the Zelda series is his wacky, almost psychotic sense of humour. You could see this during his fight near the end of the game. Zant sporadically teleports Link to previous boss battles from the game, replacing the original bosses and forcing Link to utilize items he used during those fights. I particularly enjoyed Zant's tactic during the ice level, where he becomes a giant. When hit, he jumps up and down, holding his foot.' - John Paul Foronda

Zant featured as the puppet antagonist in The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, released in 2006 for both the Nintendo Gamecube and the Nintendo Wii. He was revealed to be nothing more than a servant of Ganondorf, the longtime adversary of Link throughout the series.

Zanza
Xenoblade Chronicles

Picture
'My favourite boss is Zanza from Xenoblade Chronicles. He's an amazing villain who is determined to get what he wants, and you get led to believe he's a good guy near the start! He's also pretty hard, he took me 3 hours to beat on my first play through, as he has multiple forms and one slip up can have you or a party member killed in no time. It was a slightly frustrating but very enjoyable battle, as you need to time your attacks and plan carefully, all to some epic 'you're going to die horribly' music, of course!' - Sarah Estabrook

Zanza
, originally known as Klaus, was a scientist who was working to create a new universe. This experiment succeeded but at the expense of the previous universe, giving life to the universe of Xenoblade Chronicles.

Stay tuned for next week!

Some of our writers here at IWG got a little jealous when we started accepting these submissions, so to keep them happy we will be hosting an article of our own favourite in-game bosses. If your submission didn't make it in this time, don't fret. We'll be doing all over again at the end of next month, but with a different topic!

Don't by shy letting us know what you think either in the comments below or come find us on Twitter/Facebook - we'd love to hear from you!
