As you may have already found out, Bethesda recently dropped the bombshell that the Elder Scrolls Online will be ditching its monthly subscription fees as of the 17th of March this year. The game hits current gen consoles on June 9th and will be the first Elder Scrolls game, possibly for a long time, to hit consoles.
Current PC customers will automatically make the switch from monthly subscriptions to none, and anyone who buys the game after release day won’t have to make any payment apart from the initial price of the game. Unless you want the full experience, in which case you’ll still need to buy the premium copy. Figures. Gamers however (including myself) will be very happy to know that monthly subscriptions have now vanished. If you’re like me then most of the games I play are in fact offline, due to slightly dodgy internet or just general problems with online gaming, like not having to listen to nine-year-olds scream how many hoes they have (and I’m pretty sure they’re not on about their Minecraft tool collection.) And so, while ESO may still have primarily online components, at least we’re not having to pay extra for something that we don’t really want anyway.
This makes the game a tonne more affordable. And for anyone who does business; the cheaper something is the more likely people are to buy it. And, while Bethesda may not be raking in the monthly earnings for their game, they will be raking in the now much more plentiful first time purchases; of which I am likely to contribute to in the near future. Which, prior to this announcement, I would never have done.
I mean sure there’s still DLC, but hey, it’s a small step in the right direction.
