Tales from the Borderlands: Atlas Mugged - Review

Following the events from episode one many weeks ago,  ha’ve been eager to get back to playing as Hyperion stooge, Rhys and expert con artist, Fiona after experiencing my favourite opening episode of a Telltale game to date.

Yes it’s been a long wait for episode two, too long in fact, but you can bet your ass it was worth it.

Atlas Mugged follows the same formula as its predecessor; Rhys and Fiona explain the sequence of events as they remember them which can lead to interjections from each character such as ‘sure that happened’ in a sarcastic tone giving that element of comedy that was established in the opening episode.

Speaking of that comedic aspect, Atlas Mugged has many humourous situations throughout the episode regardless of the peril characters find themselves in. Some of my personal highlights include a fairly large sized gun labelled ‘The Overcompensator’ (yes I find dick jokes funny) or an extended joke regarding a character's appearance while shirtless. The way it’s executed in the dialogue is simply hilarious showing how well written the script is as it just feels like a natural exchange, even if they are on a fictional world inhabited mainly by murderous psychopaths.

Though sometimes it feels the humourous aspect can take away from some of the more important decisions players have to make, it cannot be said that is necessarily a bad thing as I feel it’s in keeping with the Borderlands universe.

If I give my honest opinion about Tales from the Borderlands, it’s so far my most enjoyable story. I’ve found that with many other Telltale endeavours the stories primarily have a serious atmosphere about them which can sometimes give the episodes a feeling of just sort of plodding along (GoT ep 2 for example) and when you reach the end you just accept that it’s leading up to something more. However with Borderlands, the story had an amazing flow to it, there wasn’t ever any point where I felt it was dragging on or I was just waiting for the episode's climax.

I mainly attribute this to expertly written script, with exchanges between characters whether they are serious in nature or have that comedic element. The performances by the likes of Troy Baker (Rhys), Laura Bailey (Fiona) and Patrick Warburton (Hugo Vasquez) are simply amazing, creating a great cast of characters who are genuinely a pleasure to like.

It's all about the story...

Telltale seems to have hit upon a formula for continued success on Tales from the Borderlands, but can they keep it up? Luke will no doubt keep bringing us more on the episodes as they arrive.
