Star Wars: Battlefront - What We Know

Last Friday the internet went just a little bit crazy as the Star Wars celebration got under full swing. Of course, unless you live under a rock you will know that as part of that even the World was treated to a new trailer for The Force Awakens, but for us gamers out there we were given a second, equally exciting treat in the form of the first true trailer for Star Wars: Battlefront.

For two minutes we got a first look at the beautiful carnage that awaits us when the game is released this coming winter. The Rebels take on the Empire it what appears to be a stunning ride through numerous locals in what is advertised to us as footage created by the title's own game engine. The forest moon of Endor looks as lush and as vibrant as it appeared in Return of the Jedi, while we are also shown the icy tundra's of Hoth, the arid rockiness of Tatooine and perhaps one or two other locals that can't be immediately identified. All of these locations look absolutley gorgeous with a level of realism that is near perfection.

Meanwhile we are not short of action. Rebel infantry do their best to fight off the Empire at every turn, and at first it would seem that we are shown a Rebellion that may well be on the backfoot in terms of heavy weapons, but certainly as inventive as you would expect from the plucky freedom fighters. While the Imperial forces attempt to fight back the Rebels with their AT-AT's and AT-ST's on Endor, the Rebel infantry retaliate with jetpack wielding rocket troops, as well as cleverly designed personal shield generators while other troops dogfight on the ground on Speederbikes. When all else fail's for the Rebel forces, they can always call in an air strike with a squadron of Y-Wings. After this we get to see further hardware in the form of Snowspeeder's, X-Wing's, Tie Fighters and Oh yes, that is the Millennium Falcon in the end as well. On top of this we appear to have two very special guests in the trailer in the form of the ominous Darth Vader, about to cut down a group of victorious rebels, and Boba Fett who looks to be attacking from above with his jetpack. Yet at the same time there is no apparent sight of any rebel heroes that may be enough to take on these dark warriors.

So what exactly can this trailer tell us about the game itself? Well first and foremost is that it is going to look amazing. If the footage scene really is from the games own engine then we will truly be given a feast for the eyes, but along side this we can identify that the game should hopefully feature some fast paced and brutal combat. It would appear that much of the combat will take place on an infantry level, as Battlefront is certainly used to in the past, with it all taking place on a planetary basis and turning away from the outer space battles that was featured in the second game of the series. Hopefully however we will see that the right unit at the right time can make all the difference, as we see the heavy rocket trooper able to destroy an otherwise deadly Imperial Walker. There also looks to be some fairly intense dogfights later on in the trailer as well which with look might just rival those of the Gamecube's Rogue Leader.

One particular thought to mull over is the inclusion of Vader in the trailer. This prompts the question as to whether he will be a playable unit, and if so, if the Rebels will have the likes or Luke or another Jedi that would be able to take on the dark lord. Of course, Battlefront is a multiplayer game so the answer will inevitably be that there will be someone on Vader's level, but nevertheless the promise of some Lightsaber duelling makes us even more excited for this particular war game.

The Force is strong with this one...

Star Wars: Battlefront is due to be released around the same time as The Force Awakens this year, making this clearly the year of the Galaxy far far away.
