2/19/2014

The BBC adaptation of Sherlock is by far the most ingenious and has ignited the passions of many a fan. Increasing its audience to the high million numbers, thousands upon thousands of people across the globe travel the bouts of London, dress up as their favourite characters and re-watch the series over again. After a tentative two years poised forever on a cliff hanger, the third season came with in a rush and a big bang, leaving just as quickly. Now we are left with the remains in our heart and nothing to pass the time…

…that is until the BBC released this tantalising app game named The Network. The Network immerses you into the world of 221B. You are now part of Sherlock Holmes’ Homeless Network. It is your job to go around London and solve the cases with the famous detective himself. Along the way you’ll meet characters and get clues that will lead you to the answer. Keeping an eye on the money and time, it is up to you to solve it in the quickest time possible in order for you to earn favour with Sherlock Holmes.

If you are a massive fan of the show then this is a game to keep your itching fingers occupied. Feeling more like Professor Layton, you have to solve numerous amount of puzzles and keep them stored in your mind palace. There are the usual find the routes, arrange the cars and find the clues with riddles and then there is the more advance vocal encryption that there is one major game play, the kidnapping of Mrs Hudson, the story goes into tangents to keep you occupied. Entering the mind palace, following the clues plus being utterly immersed in the world of London can be quite exhilarating at first, especially with our plucky detective informing you of updates in the luscious voice.

But the fun wears off after a while and it just becomes so ordinary. The problem is that it isn’t face paced and doesn’t grab you as much as any other games do. And though the different cases are intriguing at first it sort of starts to smatter of the same become a little bit boring. And dependant on what level your touch screen is, sometimes you can’t do things so easily making it increasingly frustrating. You’ll unnecessarily tap angry away feeling a bit bewildered at the difficulty of the seemingly ordinary game.

The Network is certainly a labour of love though and for those who aren’t massive gamers but love everything Sherlock, the effort put into creating this game. The videos and voice clips from Sherlock, Watson and Mycroft, (with all gratitude going to actors Cumberbatch, Gatiss and Freeman) are enough to propel this game into a treat. But for avid gaming fans and people with a short attention span, there isn’t enough here to truly to keep you going for the long haul.

But I’ll leave you to your deductions.
