Everybody loves something for free, and this month Playstation Plus is offering four great games to download. There might not be something that will cater to everybody's tastes, but what is on offer is certainly varied and definitely worthy of a look if you haven't played them already.
4. Tower of Guns (PS3, PS4)
3. Aaru’s Awakening (PS3, PS4)
2. Never Alone (PS4)
The game is actually based off of Inupiat folklore. A blizzard starts up, seemingly out of nowhere, and it’s on-going persistence means these Alaskan Natives are slowly beginning to waste away. A young girl sets out from the safety of her home in order to find the cause of this mysterious blizzard. Aiding her is her companion, an Arctic Fox (which I now want as a pet) whom the player is able to swap to by pressing triangle during the game. Also, if you’re one of the few who still loves to play couch co-op, a second player can hook up a controller and take control of the fox for you. The two can solve many puzzles together, the fox prompting the appearance of sky guardians to help you climb tall areas or cross large gaps. The fox itself can scrabble up walls and leap from one to the next to lower a rope for his human friend. The physics feel very similar to another fantastic sidescroller, Limbo, and fans of that particular title will certainly love this, with bosses such as polar bears acting as another form of the giant spider from the former title (though the polar bears are a hell of a lot less scary.) All in all, Never Alone is a beautiful and lovingly created little 2D puzzler, with devs who truly care about their craft.
1. Dishonored (PS3)
The main game places you in the shoes of Corvo Attano, the Royal Protector of the Empress Jessamine Kaldwin and the heir to the throne, Emily Kaldwin, voiced by Chloe Moretz. Other fantastic voice talents are lent by Michael Madson, who voices the legendary assassin Daud and Lena Headey of Game of Thrones fame. After Corvo is framed for the murder of the Empress and Lady Emily’s disappearance, Corvo dons his infamous mask seen on the cover, to hunt those who have wronged him, rescue Emily and ensure she’s placed on the throne. Along the way he is imbued with magical powers by the Outsider, a shady all seeing entity who is merely along for the ride. The powers add a great element to the game, from the basic teleportation power 'Blink', to the more combat focused powers like Whirlwind, which throws a gust of air into opponents to send them sprawling. Honestly, nothing’s more awesome than walking into a guardhouse, freezing time, firing off some crossbow bolts and watching as all of them simultaneously bury themselves in your enemies’ heads. What makes the game truly fun is the many different play styles. You can go the whole game without murdering anyone. You can sprint through the streets, throwing grenades and bullets willy-nilly, or silently, like a spectre, infiltrate homes and compounds and take out those who need to be killed. Either way, however you choose to dispatch your targets, and whatever the means are, the end will reflect that. What’s more, your body count will affect the city that you find yourself in. More dead bodies means more rats, and can manifest in either pesky swarms which can take off a sizeable chunk of your health, or in Weepers, the too-far-gone-plague victims who puke acidic bile on you when you grab them.
Dishonored is a true masterpiece of a game, and if you’re still reading this article then what are you doing? There’s a bloody amazing free game just waiting to be downloaded!
