Sony used this year's CES event to drop a couple of pieces of news: firstly, that the PS4 sold 4.2 million units by the end of 2013 and secondly, that their new Gaikai-based streaming service, Playstation Now, will be available in the US this summer.
Sony used this year's CES event to drop a couple of pieces of news: firstly, that the PS4 sold 4.2 million units by the end of 2013 and secondly, that their new Gaikai-based streaming service, Playstation Now, will be available in the US this summer.
Playstation Now will allow users to stream Playstation, PS2, and PS3 games to PS4s, PS3s, Vitas, and other Sony-produced devices, which will apparently include 2014 Bravia TVs. Sony have also mentioned that streaming will eventually be available on a 'broad range of Internet-connected devices', so you may well get to play some back catalogue games on your phone. Playstation Now will also offer cloud-based saves, so you can play the same game across different devices.
There's no news on whether or not Playstation Now will be included with Playstation Plus, or if PS Now will affect the range of games available on PS Plus. Sony have announced that users will be able to rent specific games if you don't fancy a subscription-based account.

So, Sony have managed to beat Microsoft to the punch with their streaming-for-consoles announcement; there's no news on firm dates for such a service on Xbox One currently. Beta testing of PS Now begins in the US as soon as the end of January, with a full roll-out in North America this summer.
