Metal Gear Solid V : The Phantom Pain - E3 Trailer

E3 season is well underway with the leakage of this year's first new trailer for upcoming tactical espionage sequel, Metal Gear Solid V : The Phantom Pain!

Set in 1985, the plot of MGSV deals with the violent aftermath of Ground Zeroes, the game's controversial 'prologue' chapter which was released earlier this year, and stars 24's Kiefer Sutherland as the haunted super soldier, Big Boss.

To anyone unfamiliar with the ongoing storyline to the Metal Gear series this trailer might be a little bit confusing. However, what it sells well are its graphics (which are astounding) and its immediate sense of personal drama. The trailer gives clear suggestions as to how the events of its shortly-lived predecessor ended, and they ended badly apparently and with a tragic loss of life. We see that Big Boss (or 'Snake' if you prefer) is both mentally and physically traumatised by the events, but vows a swift and terrible vengeance on those who wronged both he and his comrades. He symbolises his loyalty to them by emptying their cremated remains into his hands and then covering his face in them, creating a mask of ash. We then get a sudden flash of Big Boss's face drenched in blood.

The trailer also reintroduces iconic imagery and elements familiar to those who played the PS2 games a decade ago, with what appears to be the Big Shell (or at least a variation of it) from MGS2: Sons of Liberty, although in its earlier history, as well as the Metal Gear 'Rex' and - potentially - the infamous military fortress of Outer Heaven. The Phantom Pain takes place at a midway point in the series chronology, itself a prequel to the very first Metal Gear (which was originally released on the NES in 1987). Whilst unconfirmed at this time, the trailer might also feature younger versions of characters who will go on to play vital roles later in the fictional canon.

The trailer is played to 'Nuclear', a song by Mike Oldfield and courtesy of Mercury Records Limited.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain will be available on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 4, Xbox One next year.
