I must have been about twelve when I first read about The Sims in a magazine, and instantly knew that this was something I wanted to play. When I finally got it I was instantly hooked. For many years I played only The Sims, and then only The Sims 2, and then only The Sims 3. Then I started branching out into other games, and the Sims franchise became less interesting to me, but The Sims was my gateway drug to gaming.
It was like going back to a simpler time. Once I’d managed to install everything and actually get it to work, anyway. There’s something cute about getting an error message saying, Warning! This game requires 64MB RAM to play!
It looks dated. I mean, it looks properly old. And the game mechanics are sluggish and unintuitive, and you can’t zoom in properly, and the Sims themselves are dumb, like really properly stupid in the way that if you’re not constantly micromanaging them they will kill themselves in some hilarious way. But playing it again was a lot of fun, and when I got tired of my Sims being whiny I’d just go into build mode and listen to the lovely piano music there.
So, what I’m really saying is that you kids need to get off my lawn and leave me to grumble about how much better everything was when I was a kid.
Sometimes you can't beat the original...
