Space Run is a (relatively) new game from the French Indie game studio Passtech Games. It’s the first game and I gotta say; it’s a doozy.
You are Buck Mann (unfortunately… it’s okay. It gets better), a space trucker who is tasked – over the course of a bunch of different missions – to get cargo of various types from point A to point B. To help you on your way, you have access to different weapons, power plants, engines, and defensive technologies (all of which are upgradeable – at a price).
Each of the 30 missions are scored out of five stars. One for completing, two for speed, and two more for the percentage of cargo you get across the finishing line. So, yes, you can complete the mission incredibly slowly and with all your cargo blown off your ship, and you still come out with one star. That can be handy for the really tough missions you just want to get passed.
Thing is, progression depends on you getting a certain amount of stars and completing specific missions – by specific missions, I mean all of them, in turn. There’s a tentative story, albeit one which is cliché riddled. You have to do all the missions to complete the story – but, you are given the choice between different missions, so you’re never bottle-necked into limited choices, until you’re approaching the end of the game.
If you enjoy tower defense, this is for you. If you enjoy space games, this is for you. If you, like me, enjoy micromanaging every aspect of your day and everyone around you… yeah, this might be for you
There are also a few spelling errors and occasionally the script which was recorded by the voice actors is different to the one you see on screen.
There were some bugs in the earlier version, but with a recent update, I haven’t seen them reoccur.
Speed matters, in a way, but it’s like a mini-game.
I really can’t express how well I think this game has been designed. The pacing feels so finely tuned that I never felt that there was nothing I could do, nowhere to go. Even if it meant going back to do a previous mission again, it felt right. Make some cash on an easier mission, maybe get another star, and then move on to the newer, tougher missions.
At this point, for me, it’s not about getting those three illusive stars or those last achievements. It’s ‘cause it’s fun. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got to introduce Brown Beard the Pirate to the cold emptiness of space one more time.
