Game of Thrones: The Sword in the Darkness - Review

The third instalment of Telltale’s adaptation of Game of Thrones crept up on me, I had no idea of its existence until a few days prior to release.

As I stated in my thoughts about the second episode, it primarily felt like it was  building up to future events, so I was quite pleased with episode three delivering on some exciting story development and characters placed in absolutely awful situations who you have to make decisions for (always fun) so it was a very engaging episode.

Fear not! As with previous articles on the Game of Thrones series, this too will be spoiler free. You should know by now our protagonists are members of House Forrester, all trying in some way or another to serve their house to the best of their ability without ruffling the feathers of the larger houses in the land of Westeros.

I’m going to go ahead and say that this is so far my favourite episode in the series. The story has really started to move along and has become really engaging with new curveballs thrown the way of our many characters. There’s also always, for me at least, the feeling that even if I make what I believe to be the right decision for the character I’m controlling at that time… I can’t help but wonder if I’ve accidently screwed over someone else. Also for the first time in the series I’ve really felt the sting of the decisions and choices I’ve made in previous episodes.

A scene would play out where other characters would express disappointment or berate me for the choices I made and my memory started scrambling back to my play through of prior instalments and leading to ask myself how I could have possibly made the choice I did. This isn't an unusual thing in Telltale titles but with Game of Thrones it really does feel like you have these peoples live's in your hands.

The Wall, Ironrath, Yunkai and King’s Landing all feature as the backdrops for events. While some of these settings are nicely done (The Wall does look rather cool) I’m still not sold on the art style. It’s not too horrendous but at the same time it is distracting when you see something and it looks rather blotchy which somewhat detracts from the experience. The only other gripe I have is that while playing on the PlayStation 4 version I thought the game had crashed; often freezing on one still image but it was just taking its sweet time loading. I’m not sure whether this means lazy optimising or something else but there was also texture pop ins in other areas which again, is rather annoying.

That said, my overall experience of episode three was a good one There were some little kinks in it but I doubt they are universal issues. Of course in true Telltale fashion they left it on a tasty cliff hanger while introducing another familiar face in the Game of Thrones universe, here’s to hoping it comes out sooner than expected.

"I am the watcher on the walls..."

Telltale is certainly able to capture the hard choices of the Game of Thrones universe.
