From Liberation to Unity.

It’s that time of year again, folks!

It comes as no surprise to anyone that Assassin’s Creed will be returning at the end of the year. The series follows the fictionalised history of an ongoing war between two factions (the Assassins and the Templars), and has had its fair share of leaks in the past. Concept art for both Assassin’s Creed III and Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag had been leaked online in the weeks before its official announcement.

The name of the new game is currently Assassin’s Creed: Unity. The lack of a number in the title suggests that this story will most likely be a side-step like with Assassin’s Creed: Liberation, although it may well feature pivotal story events which will no doubt shape the sequels, such as was the case with both Brotherhood and Revelations. And, like those games, Unity will be returning the series to the more classic European setting. This time however – instead of mere concept art – we have actually been treated to early gameplay footage to ogle at until the game’s official announcement by Ubisoft. Details surfaced on Neogaf last week that the game will feature a new protagonist named Arno and will take place in Paris, set at some point during the French Revolution.

Although the choice of setting might not be all that surprising considering that this era has been cited as being an ideal setting for an Assassin’s Creed game more than once throughout the years, it is interesting that – especially following on from Black Flag – that the developers have chosen to return to the style they embraced for Ezio’s trilogy. Let’s just hope it doesn’t turn out to be a misstep, but we’ll reserve judgement for when we see more. The leaked screenshots clearly show the new Assassin roaming around the plazas of Paris, although it should be made clear that these images were never meant to be made public (which is why Paris appears largely empty and why the graphics appear quite simple compared to Black Flag). This is evidently only a beta version of the game and the finished product will most likely appear very different. Although Ubisoft have yet to release a statement, it is more than likely that we will be treated to more information of Unity over the course of the next few months.
