I started dating my boyfriend almost four years ago. From the get go he was very honest about his lifestyle and his experience with relationships. He is a messy fellow. He enjoys a good smoke. He over does it when he drinks, and has a deep love for video games. I grew up with two older brothers and a younger one, all avid gamers, so the idea of dating someone who loved video games didn’t seem like it would be too much of a bother. In fact it seemed like it would be more fun than dating a guy who is into sports. I for one do not partake in sports, in fact I’d call myself someone who enjoys the occasional video game every now and then, when time permits.
I revel in it. I spend all my free time with my boyfriend, aside from girl’s day with my best friend, Theresa that is. If I am given time in which I can work on my passions, without my boyfriend leaning over my shoulder, I revel in it. My boyfriend is very passionate about his gaming. It offers him an escape from the struggles of real life; paying bills, doing calculus and chemistry, going to his crappy pizza boy job. I let him have that because I love him. I recently talked to him about his gaming buddies, a few are married… Many are in long-term relationships. All of those friends are given times of the day or days of the week in which they are allowed to play video games. Allowed. The very idea boggles my mind. Men restricted by their wives/girlfriends from engaging in things they love? What good does this do? What do you expect them to do otherwise? Honestly it makes me angry. I let my boyfriend do as he pleases because he is a human and deserves to do as he wishes without fear of backlash.
Even though I sometimes don’t get to spend time with my boyfriend, gaming has enriched our time together. My boyfriend knows that there are games I cannot play… For example I am completely rubbish at racing games. I cannot aim a gun in a game to save my life, and forget anything that has to do with ‘Mechs’ or spaceships.
