Dying Light is an upcoming first-person, story-driven survival game set in a post-apocalyptic setting filled with hordes of the undead. It is developed by Techland will be published by Warner Bros. Interactive when it arrives on both current and next-gen systems early next year.
To kick off this year's E3, a gameplay trailer was unveiled today on the game's official Youtube channel, which shows the protagonist slinging himself across the ruined city in order to evade the infectious hordes below, and all the while being in contact with a mysterious assailant who seems to know a suspicious amount about the ongoing epidemic. Interestingly, Dying Light originally began its development as a second sequel to the Dead Island series but evolved into an entirely new IP when Techland decided to introduce gameplay elements (such as parkour abilities and a sprawling open-world setting) which would distance it from the original franchise.
It's also possible that the developers sort to start afresh with the zombie genre as Dead Island was met with only average scores after a huge build-up of anticipation from their initial E3 reveal a couple of years ago. Although the setting for Dying Light looks very different and there are several new gameplay mechanics introduced in this trailer, the game overall still contains various clear similarities to Dead Island.
But there's still time yet and the development process in still continuing, meaning that Techland has the opportunity to really give Dying Light its own unique identity as a separate IP. The important thing however is that, unlike with the announcement trailer of Dead Island, this trailer gives us a glimpse into the gameplay and what - hopefully - the final product will include.

Dying Light will available on Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and on PC in February 2015.
