Since the franchise first started on the Nintendo 64 back in 1999 I’ve been an avid fan and loved every game in the series, which is odd for me as I usually despise the majority of fighting games. Jump to 2014 and the world is graced with another Smash Bros title on not just the home console of the Wii U but also the amazing handheld that is the 3DS, with the 3DS edition to be released in the summer and the Wii U version out in the winter… I’m expecting console bundles for the Christmas period.

By Luke Kirby It’s somewhat of a harsh truth but the catalogue of games on the Wii U has been rather lacking, specifically with the popular/iconic franchises, since the release of the console in November 2012. So I gleefully look forward to the release of Mario Kart 8 released on the 30th of May because quite frankly my Wii U is gathering thicker layers of dust as the days go on. By Paul Robert Scott The future seems rosy for virtual reality. With products like the Oculus Rift and Sony’s Project Morpheus for the PS4 currently wowing tech junkies, and rumours abound that Microsoft will announce their own system for the XBOX One it seems more and more likely that there will come a day when we won’t be playing our favourite games in front of the TV, but with a VR headset strapped over our eyes. But while this certainly sounds like an exciting way forward it is not the first time that the gaming community has been promised a Virtual Reality revolution, and as players have consistently sought greater immersion in their gameplay, so too have developers tried to create new technologies that have turned out to be little more than gimmicks in the long run. In many ways the quest for Virtual Reality has become the white whale of the video game industry. by Ben Mapp That is the question. The battle for the eighth generation of console gaming began in November 2012 with Nintendo’s entry, the Wii U (successor to their hugely popular Wii system). Having played the console myself (through my flatmate's console) I can verify that, although the console is designed for group gameplay, it is a worthy experience and certainly provides hours of fun just like other consoles. It also offers a unique type of immersion very different to any of its rivals. Nintendo have described this style of innovative gameplay as "asymetrical". |
