Many of you have probably played the incredible BioShock series. I myself am unfortunate enough to have only played the most recent instalment in the amazing series, however (as I don’t reside beneath a rock) I am well aware of the story, the love and the impact on the gaming world that come with the name “BioShock.” And rejoice, for the love of this breath-taking virtual artwork is not just shared by us avid gamers, but by many a film-buff and yes, even film maker.
For a time now the possibilities of a movie adaptation of the game have been known by many; even given an official director, the legendary (if slightly polarising) Gore Verbinski. Verbinski has been the mastermind behind the incredibly fun Pirates of the Caribbean series, as well as quirky and artistic films such as Rango (a really good watch by the way.) With his grounding in both fun, action-centered films, and much slower, artistic ones, it was hoped that Verbinski could do what no-one else has achieved; make a decent game to film adaptation. However the fates decided it was not to be, canning the idea in its infancy. Most likely it was felt that the film wouldn’t make enough money, or that it would flop, like Verbinski’s recent (but still fun) film, The Lone Ranger.
However, this news was made even more crushing, as artwork for the new film recently hit the interwebs, showing some incredible and awe-inspiring designs that seemed to bring the creepy and menacing world of Rapture even further to life. Many fans agree that being concept art, the end product may have been skewed by Hollywood execs, and so lost both its originality and its closeness to the source material. I for however, would have paid good money to see it on the big screen, in all its menacing underwater glory.
The art was provided by one Kasra Farahani, a concept artist whose portfolio on this project (along with many others) can be found right here.
