Arkham 3?

2/14/2013

It’s certainly been an exciting opening for 2013 in videogames, with the releases of Antichamber & The Cave, for example (reviews coming soon). But the thing that really got my heart pounding today was the announcement of another sequel in the Batman: Arkham franchise.

Warner Bros have publicly registered a heap of possible domain names, some suggesting a prequel to the already brilliant series; others put a more vague DC spin on the subject, putting out ideas of a much more widespread game. I for one would be enthralled by a game with the sandbox nature and freeflow combat system of Arkham City, but with the full DC spectrum of characters to play as – specifically the main Justice League; Supes, Wonder Woman, Flash, etc.

It comes as a surprise, however, that Warner Bros is insistent Rocksteady will have the game ready for publishing this year, already! Arkham Asylum came out in 2009, but I was still engrossed in playing it right up until City came out in late 2011 (which I’ve also been playing on and off all last year).  To release three games (in a series that has simply gone from strength to strength) within six years is an incredible feat.

I am more psyched for this than I can remember being for a game. Dishonored comes close, but I doubt any game could match the thrill of the possibility of a Superman or Wonder Woman version of Arkham…
