After rumours and speculation Telltale games confirmed that it is working on an episodic Game of Thrones series for 2014, not much other information has been provided as development is in its early stages.
As a fan of both the TV series and the novels, A Song of Ice and Fire, I was really pleased to hear this rumour confirmed. I’m excited to see what story will be told in the land of Westeros as there is just so much going on in the books it seems that they’ll be able to provide a brilliant story as they have done with other titles; The Walking Dead and The Wolf Among Us.
While there isn’t much information other than a Game of Thrones game is being created the Tales from the Borderlands series has a meatier trailer that we can gather some information from (look below for links).
It seems that the main protagonist is “Fiona” described by her wanted poster in the trailer to be involved in 1st degree fraud, grifting, scamming and quackery. So from this I assume that your character isn’t like the main set from Borderlands 2, in that they do not have somewhat superhuman abilities but rather one of the various other ‘vault hunters’ who are obviously less known.
I’m interested to see how they tell this story just purely because of the Borderlands games and how they will make this transition into a story telling experience when the main games are driven by its crazy, fast paced FPS nature.
I also can’t help but wonder whether fans of the Borderlands series will be interested in playing the Telltale adaptation simply because of difference in gameplay. I for one am very excited as I clocked up a hefty 120+ hours on Borderlands 2 and I’m also a fan of The Walking Dead series and the Wolf Among Us.
There is one other little issue that I’d like to bring up, currently Telltale are working on four titles and while I’m looking forward to each of them I can’t help but feel possibly maybe they’re spreading themselves a bit thin. The Walking Dead season 2 episode 1 is released on the 17th December. The second episode of The Wolf Among Us, Smoke and Mirrors, is apparently scheduled for release after the holidays, despite hearing rumours that it was set for end of November release.
Now on top of these two titles being released they also have the two new episodic stories to work on. Hopefully this doesn’t mean that release dates for new episodes are pushed back due to them being incomplete and still need working on. It’s been roughly 2-3 months since I played “Faith” the first episode of The Wolf Among Us and I’m hungry for more.
All this said I’m really looking forward to 2014 and these games are a big reason for it, despite having my slight concerns I’m certain that Telltale will deliver with brilliant stories, interesting twists and gut wrenching decision making as they have done with other titles.
