After watching The Drop, I had to go back and watch the trailer for the film, and I realised that the film that the trailer had promised didn’t show up. The trailer for The Drop portrayed a dark and gritty tale of respect and revenge as Tom Hardy and James Gandolfini find out who stole from them while having to deal with a dangerous man in Matthias Schoenaerts. Strangely though, we don’t get that sort of film. The first half does have that gritty feel, especially when you see someone’s ankle drilled into the floor of a van, but as the film progresses the darkness of the film disappears. They seem to have missed a step particularly in the third act of the film and it just leaves you with a feeling of “What did I just watch?”

They seem to have missed a step particularly in the third act of the film and it just leaves you with a feeling of “What did I just watch?” by Sean Narborough I hate Halloween. Number of reasons why: gives people permission to act like arseholes just because it’s Halloween; trick-or-treaters constantly knocking on my door; and, most of all, the shit ton of shit horror films released every year! So, how do I get through the 31st day of October every year? Alternative Halloween films! Films that have elements of a scary film, but have something a little different about them. So, here are my four alternative Halloween films to watch. by Sean Narborough No not the game, so calm AC fanboys. The film adaption of the multi-million dollar best selling game, Assassin’s Creed, has been delayed. Originally scheduled to come out on the 7th August 2015, 20th Century Fox has pushed back the popular franchise to an “unspecified 2016 release date”. Fox have claimed that the film will simply not be ready in time for the 2015 release date. But this is both good and bad news. It’s bad news for video game film adaptions, which don’t have the best reputation. Many of them fail to draw people into the cinema and never really get a sequel or a second chance, with the exception of the Resident Evil movie franchise. Assassin’s Creed was seen as the rebirth of the video game adaptions due to the game’s huge popularity and uniquely different story, and the fact that they had signed Michael Fassbender to star and produce the film too. It was seen as possibly The Dark Knight of the video game adaptions. But this delay is also good. Fox have said that the film’s not ready yet for next year, which means this gives the filmmakers time to improve on the film. The pressure the film has to kick start video game adaptions is huge, and this now gives them time to perfect a quite complicated story and film. Also so far there hasn’t been anything shown from the film, no teasers, no posters, no set photos, nothing. This works hugely in Fox’s favour. Because they haven’t set a release date for 2016, they can now wait until they have something truly great to show audiences and not tease audiences with something subpar. Whether the delay will be good or bad for Assassin’s Creed, we’ll have to wait, but the extra time now to improve the film is only going to add more pressure for the film. by Sean Narborough One of the biggest leaks this week to not involve a naked celebrity is a picture of Jesse Eisenberg on set, but is this the new look for Lex Luthor? Eisenberg is playing the arch-villain in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, which is being filmed at the moment. The picture was taken by a fan of Eisenberg who then posted the picture on their Twitter page, which has lead to many people speculating that this is the new look for Lex Luthor. First thing first, yes he isn’t bald, but anyone who knows the history of Superman knows that Lex did have hair before going bald. But the interesting fact about his hair there is that it’s red, which the same colour Lex has before losing his hair. But another question going around is whether this is Eisenberg’s hair or a wig? Some people have said that it could be his real hair and they’ve just dyed and straighten his hair. But I think it’s a wig. Anyone who has seen what Jesse Eisenberg looks like knows that he has quite curly hair. It seems odd that they would give him a hair cut so different from his normal hair that they would have to constantly work on it. Plus if you look at the hairline, it’s too high. My best guess is that this scene is either early on in the film or a flashback. But Snyder hasn’t confirmed yet whether Lex will be bald in this film, he could lose his hair later in the film or in the next film. At this point we don’t know. Either way I think this is an interesting direction to go and I really hope Eisenberg is able to pull something out of the bag in his role as Lex Luthor. by Sean Narborough If you weren’t excited about the DC Cinematic Universe before, you will be now. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has confirmed via his twitter account that he will be playing villain Black Adam in the planned Shazam movie. Now I know what some people will be thinking, “Who the hell is Shazam?” Unless you know your comic books, you won’t know anything about Shazam or Black Adam. It’s because of this that DC hiring Johnson is a smart move. Dwayne has an incredibly strong fanbase whether it’s from the wrestling fans or fans of his acting. In the past couple of years, Johnson has starred in the G.I Joe and Fast and Furious films with more in those franchises to come. Johnson is now entering himself into another franchise that is struggling to grow. Despite (in my opinion) having a stronger presence at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, audiences are still more excited about the Marvel Cinematic Universe rather than DC’s. Part of the problem could be that DC doesn’t have any big recognisable names in their films with the exception of Ben Affleck. Johnson’s addition to the DCCU is big. The fact that they have announced the villain of the Shazam movie before the title character himself shows the excitement that DC is hoping that The Great One will bring. Not much else is known about the film apart from Johnson and Hiram Garcia will be producing and the script will be written by Darren Lemke, who previously wrote Turbo, Jack The Giant Slayer and the upcoming Goosebumps adaption (yeah, I would be worried about the script too). There is no release date yet but Warner Bros. does have a DC-based film set for August 5th 2016, so I wouldn’t bet against Shazam taking that date. I think hiring Dwayne Johnson is an excellent choice to play the “anti-hero” and probably will be great in this role, I mean there is a reason Johnson is called the most electrifying man in entertainment. by Sean Narborough Making your first feature length film will always be a difficult challenge. You have to make sacrifices, things like money, time, job prospects and relationships. But if it comes out well, it’s worth it and for writer/director Andrew Flynn and crew it was worth it. by Sean Narborough Good news for London based Marvel fans. To help celebrate the release of Captain America: The Winter Soldier on the 18th August, Marvel has set up an exclusive art exhibition in London for a limited amount of time. The exhibition will showcase artwork from artists that have been inspired by the Marvel Cinematic Universe. by Sean Narborough One of the biggest things I realised while at a Q&A event for The Inbetweeners 2 was that everyone there on stage is just as weird in real life as they are on screen. Held at the Apple Store on Regent Street, writer/directors Damon Beesley and Iain Morris and the cast themselves, Simon Bird, Joe Thomas, James Buckley and Blake Harrison, all turned up to help promote the boys’ newest adventure onto the big screen There are good movies, there are bad movies. And then there are movies that everyone cannot stop talking about because we love it so much and we want to tear our faces off because it is so good. Guardians of the Galaxy is that movie. Since Peter Quill and his band of merry assassins and bounty hunters gathered to defend the galaxy, we've been happily chomping into it like a brilliant feast. So, the I'm With Geek staff have pooled together our thoughts because just one review on the subject matter just isn't enough. by Sean Naraborough While over-looking a, to be honest, disappointing San Diego Comic-Con, I found the leaked picture of the model of The Thing from the Fantastic Four reboot, and this got me thinking, where the hell was the Fantastic Four reboot at Comic-Con? This is a film coming out in June....next year! We saw more of Dawn of Justice, which doesn’t come out for another two freaking years. And it worked because everyone is talking about Batman/Superman more than anything. With Marvel coming up short and not much else happening at Comic-Con this year, 20th Century Fox really should have taken advantage of this. They should have had the director, Josh Trank, and the writers, Simon Kinberg and Jeremy Slater, turn up and give an update on the film so far, or, even better, have the first photo op of all principal actors, all together for the first time (Yes, they really haven’t done that yet). So what’s going on with this reboot? Why do we know so little about it with less than a year before it’s released? |
