Hayley's Top 'TerriBrill' Movies

The films I’m going to list in this top five are all often described as 'so-bad-its-good.' I prefer the term 'terribrill' myself, but essentially, that is what I’m going to talk about today. Contained in my top five are films that are either mightily entertaining despite their failures, or those that are so poorly-realised that watching them is like looking at a car crash that you can’t tear your eyes away from, no matter how much you know you should. By no means is this the definitive list. There are undoubtedly hundreds of films from the Sy-Fy Channel alone that could go in here. Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately) I’ve not had the chance to see them all.

By modern 'terribrill' films, I am talking about those released post-millennium. I’ve only chosen this stipulation because it was the only way I could narrow this list down to five. I also want to point out that this is not a guilty pleasure list. I don’t have guilty pleasures, because I don’t feel guilty about any of the awful nonsense I watch.

Man of Steel 2 has been given the release date of Friday the 17th of July, 2015, and will be filmed in Detroit, Michigan. Review: Pain & Gain

Having (proudly) missed all of Michael Bay's work since Bad Boys 2, I was pleasantly surprised when it was announced that the big time director would slum it with the rest of us and make a quiet indie crime film with a considerably smaller budget. I was considerably less impressed when it was revealed that the budget would sit at $25 million (hardly chump change), but I guess when you compare it to that of the last Transformers' movie budget ($195 million), it’s an amiable step down. Thankfully, Bay redeemed himself in my eyes in the form of a ragtag cast with indie and bizarre credits: with Mark Walhberg playing against his buddy cop image, and Dwayne "the Rock" Johnson/Anthony Mackie bringing the laughs. Admittedly I'll watch anything with the aging wrestler thanks to Fast Five (2011), but a quirky trailer with genuine laughs sealed the deal.

Review: Elysium

I’m about to say something that may attract me a lot of hate. Ready? I think District 9 is overwhelmingly over-rated. I found very little enjoyment in the film. The change from documentary style filming to action film was one that really felt uneven, and the plot did not entice me in anyway. So you can imagine I was less than enthusiastic about Elysium. To be honest, I’m not too big on Sci-Fi films; the thought of watching one always puts me off. And that’s why there are some legendary examples of the genre I haven’t seen yet, such as Blade Runner, Metropolis, Sunshine etc. But Elysium was a film that my friend was eager to see. Therefore, I had to give it a chance. And by that point, it appealed to me a lot more, but I still had my doubts. Could Neill Blomkamp win me over this time round, or would it fall down to its predecessor’s level?

My, it seems like only yesterday when I started this.

We are certainly the nadir of the series. Mainly because it feels like there’s a great deal of nothing going on during these films. It’s not really the director’s fault; the books hadn’t been finished by this time. The considerations of what would and wouldn’t be important towards the endgame were still very speculative. But without further ado, let’s start fixing.

The lack of the Dursley’s in this film isn’t a problem in and of itself. Following book five, they become fairly irrelevant until the seventh book. But the addition of them would allow the set up of Fred and George’s joke shop in the next books. Also, Dudley’s exceedingly long tongue would be a great thing to see on screen.

Review: Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters

Walking in to the cinema yesterday, I did not at all think that I would be writing a negative article about Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters. No, I walked in hoping for a film that lived up to the greatness of the books and was a better follow on from the first film, Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, which, to me, was rather disappointing. But hey, surely a new director meant that things had to get better?

Wrong.

Hit Stop: Piranha 3D

Well, this shouldn’t take too long.

Piranha 3D is quite possibly the worst piece of garbage ever committed to cinema. The only redeeming quality is that it ends, not well mind you, but an ending nonetheless.

The film was produced solely to try and sell 3D to the masses, and it failed. Instead, the producers and writers obviously decided to throw all the money they were given for the production towards boobs, blood and bad scripting. After deciding that the 3D element would be given over entirely to showing dismembered penises and breasts, everyone apparently decided to celebrate with as much alcohol as possible. Then they turned up for filming the next day whilst suffering the biggest hangover since the aftermath of Sodom and Gomorrah. That is the only conclusion I can come to as to how this film came to be.

Hit Play: The Help

It is very rare to find a movie where all the performers completely knock it out the park. There is always one misplaced actor who doesn’t fit in well with all the brilliance that is shining through. Whether it is a bit part or a main character, some just don’t pull their weight and ride on the coat tails of a far more capable actor. This being said, here is a film where everyone outshines and every second is a gripping drama held up by the ungodly talent of those involved. I am of course talking about The Help, winner of the Screen Actors Guild for ensemble cast.

Review: We're the Millers

A stripper, a drug dealer, a tearaway and a virgin are all in an RV together trying to smuggle drugs over a Mexican border. Nope that isn’t the beginning of a bad joke, that is the plot for We’re the Millers. Starring Jason Sudekis and Jennifer Aniston, Dave is a small time drug dealer but when he is robbed of all his drugs and the money he owes his boss, he is forced to become a smuggler. However, looking incredibly shifty as men with stubble do, Dave knows that he will be stopped and searched. He then gets the brilliant idea to hire his stripper neighbour Rose, geeky virgin Kenny and homeless Casey to pose as a family; stuffing the drugs in the RV to sneak over the line. As with every road trip journey, not everything goes according the plan.

Hollywood's Biggest Box Office Flops

There are always those films we walk into the cinema to see and come walking out thinking "what on earth was that all about". Directors can sometimes think they'll draw people in with nothing more than a few explosions and the odd chase scene. However this is not the only trap film makers fall for; many plummet into the black hole of no return by simply having high expectations and by emptying their pockets. With a mixture of bad storylines, horrendous graphics and an overall spending so large that you might as well not show the film at all, these five biggest failures should never have made it to the screen in the first place. Wrath of the Titans and Green Lantern were very lucky to cut it close but not actually fall into this list of devastation and all-round disappointment.
