Drive is a film that is so simple yet inspired by so many different genres. The film could be described as a neo-noir heist thriller. The film also has the undertones of a Western. At the heart of the film is a passionate encounter between a single mother and the films edgy man of few words lead played to perfection by Ryan Gosling.

Following its unnamed anti-hero driver who works part time as a stunt double and at night as a criminal get away driver. He forms a close relationship with his neighbour, Irene and her young son. The return of Irenes ex-con husband draws him into a dangerous heist that puts everyone involved at risk.

Elephant

After looking at Robbie's list, it occurred to me he has a liking for upbeat films. Therefore, upon Robbie, I bestow Gus Van Sant's heartbreaking social commentary, exploring the darker side of humanity; Elephant.

The shockingly brutal film follows the victims of the Columbine disaster, where students from Columbine high school were shot dead by fellow classmates, in the hours leading up to their deaths. Van Sant's work is awkward and disturbing, as you find yourself constantly on edge at the elephant in the room. It will certainly star with you for a long time after viewing.

I chose this film because it is quite a powerful and personal film about the Vietnam War, and is the first in a trilogy of films about the Vietnam War, directed by Oliver Stone. From the list of your favourite movies, it seems like a good fit, but something you may not have seen (I hope!), as you seem to enjoy movies focusing on variations of war and horror. Platoon is quite a hard-hitting film, and features some stellar performances from Berenger, Dafoe and Sheen, and because of its nature, I thought it would be an appropriate choice for you to watch. Stone is particularly skilled in displaying his personal accounts of war into his work, and I feel as if you would appreciate this ‘personal’ touch to the film, from your favourite movies list, provided you haven’t seen it before!

Despite Christopher Nolan being a pretty big name in cinema, many people haven’t seen his early works. Unlike the Batman trilogy and The Prestige his first feature film, Following is very much driven by its narrative and certainly lacks in the special effects department. One of the main reasons I enjoyed Following so much is that whatever you are expecting when you watch it, it won’t be that at all. It is shot in black and white which gives this thriller a very noir feel, and also makes you think about the process of filmmaking before such technology came into play. Another fact that impressed me about the film is that the cast and crew who were involved did this in their spare time and were only able to shoot on the weekends due to being in full-time work.

My film for Gloria is Magic Mike. In a similar fashion to The Wolf of Wall Street, Magic Mike is a perfect blend of drama and comedy. Whilst it seemed to be marketed as light-hearted romp, Magic Mike actually gets rather dark in places, in the same way as TWOWS, which makes for an excellent contrast. Even if you're not a woman, Magic Mike is a hugely enjoyable film, with the stripping scenes proving to be rather entertaining and hilarious, and maybe a bit more for some others.... In addition, the films stars Matthew McConaughey towards the start of his "McConaissance". He is brilliant in Dallas Buyers Club and The Wolf of Wall Street, but it was around the time of Magic Mike he started proving to everyone that he had genuine talent.

I choose Do The Right Thing because, from your list, I can tell you like science fiction and surrealist cinema and Do The Right Thing is distinctly the opposite. It's a realist film that explores race and multi-cultural living way before its time. Other than that, though, it's extremely funny and incredibly accessible. Do The Right Thing is a powerful, uplifting and visually stunning masterpiece. And it's the best Spike Lee has to offer. I hope you enjoy it.

I haven't seen Despicable Me 2, but I did see the first. I haven't seen any of the How To Train Your Dragon films, so that's a blank for me. I have seen everything else on the list, and after mulling it over for awhile, I reached a decision.

This is Wes Anderson's take on a Roald Dahl book about a larcenous fox's struggles against cruel local farmers Boggis, Bunce and Bean.

I picked something that, for me, is a fantastic piece of work both in cinematography and writing. It's a film I return to whenever I sit to write a substantial script and serves as a handbook for how to create a compelling, isolated, organic drama that really drags you in. It's so rich in it's execution and attention that I'm sure you'll love it too.

Upon William I bestow 12 Monkeys! Why did I pick this for William? These are the films he chose as among his favorites: Serenity, Rear Window, The Dark Knight, Back to the Future, The Shawshank Redemption, Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Frequency. Based on his preferences, I see he likes dark, he like science fiction, (but thoughtful science fiction), and he has two movies on his list that feature time travel (plus he's also a fan of The Time Traveler's Wife, so that's three).

Lady in White is a film from my childhood that geniunely sent chills down my spin. The film follows a prominent horror writer as he remembers his childhood. As a boy, Frankie witnesses and falls prey to a great evil. The experience puts him in contact with the spirit world where he tries to help a lost host. The film does not use impressive special effects or gore. It is chilling due to it's simplicity and tone. Set in an idyllic American town that has a dark past beneath it's white picket fence exterior. The film was not a great success nor is it well known, but there is something nostalgic in it's old fashioned horror. Not without flaws, I choose this for the experiment, to see if it only frightened me as a child.
