Another year has passed. Another year of superheroes, high octane action, side splitting comedy, and gripping drama. And you know what? It’s been rather fantastic. You’ve seen the films I loathed, now it’s the time for the ones I loved, and believe me, there were plenty!

There are quite a few films from 2013 I haven’t yet had a chance to see, stuff like Only God Forgives, This is the End, Rush, Filth etc. But I look forward to them. Now, sadly it’s only a top ten, so there are many films that had to be cut.

Best of 2013: Django Unchained

In 1992 an independent film called Reservoir Dogs premiered at The Sundance Film Festival. With the film the world was introduced to a young film maker called Quentin Tarantino and the rest, as they say, is history. The film was a phenomenon and showcased Tarantino as one of the most talented and ground breaking directors of his generation. From then on, news of a new Tarantino films carries with it high expectations and anticipation. This year it was the release of Django Unchained, what Tarantino dubbed a ‘Southern;’ a western set in the deep-south. It follows the adventures of a freed slave, Jamie Foxx, on his quest to save the woman he loves from a cruel plantation owner. A thrilling, compelling film that ranks among the best of the directors work and is easily my film of 2013.

Personally, I prefer to call these things what they are: My Favourite Films of the Year.

Incredibly subjective as my choices are, these are the films I enjoyed most over the course of my year's cinema viewing. Everything considered for this list was something I saw this year and which were released this year (otherwise Alien and The Blues Brothers would be sitting pretty high up there). And it should be noted that there was much I missed at the time (like Malick's To the Wonder) or that I simply haven't seen in time for making this list (like The Hobbit: a The Desolation of Smaug). Would these films have made the list? Seems unfair to count out their potential, but my parameters are what they are.

And so, with that explanation (and, let's be honest, defence) aside, I present to you now my 10 Favourite Films of 2013. Feel free to disagree in the comment section below.

Best of 2013: The World's End

This year is about to end, and movie-wise, it has been a very interesting one; albeit not as good as we expected it to be.

There have been a number of big titles but very few delivered (Iron Man 3, Star Trek: Into Darkness, Man of Steel, The Wolverine, Fast 6, The Hangover 3, Monsters University, After Earth, Prisioners, Gravity.)

Don’t get me wrong, some of them have been good but not great. Others, simply disappointing.

This year has been full of hits, and it's always difficult to pick a movie of the year. After flopping between two films, I picked one and that particular film is Disney's Frozen. I believe, out of the staff writing Movie of the Year articles, I'm the only one who has picked an animated film.

Best of 2013: Escape Plan

Have you ever been so excited for a film that just thinking about it makes you emotional every time the film title is mentioned? And no matter how many times you watch the trailer, it just isn’t enough? For months and months, you had been looking forward to this film, and with every day that came closer to the release date you thought you could taste the awesomeness…and then out of nowhere it was taken away from you. The cinematic release was taken away from you, with no real reasoning of why. You then curl up in a ball in your bed, lay in the covers and cry. That is how much you wanted to see this film, this is how much emotion you invested into something you had been waiting for your whole life.

Best of 2013: Behind The Candelabra

Is Behind the Candelabra my favourite film of 2013? Probably not. I don’t usually decide these things until 31st December just in case I see something else in these next few days, but it’s certainly one of the best, and a fitting adieu for one of the modern cinematic greats, director Steven Soderbergh.

While intended as a HBO TV movie, the UK thankfully received a theatre release, allowing us to relish in the beautiful set design and the larger-than-life personality of Liberace on the big screen. Behind the Candelabra tells the story of the last few years of Liberace’s life, specifically his six-year relationship with Scott Thorson.

Best of 2013: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

I held off seeing Catching Fire until quite a while after it was released in cinema in order to see it for the first time with my friends, though by that time I could have already watched it twice. It was a film that I had been anticipating ever since the first film, which I saw as a major success. So as I settled down into my cinema seat with my milkshake I was practically giddy with excitement. This was multiplied when, as the film started, someone in the audience did the whistle. Yes, those of you that have seen or read The Hunger Games, it was the four note whistle Rue and Katniss used to communicate in the 74th Hunger Games.
