If you weren’t excited about the DC Cinematic Universe before, you will be now. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has confirmed via his twitter account that he will be playing villain Black Adam in the planned Shazam movie. Now I know what some people will be thinking, “Who the hell is Shazam?” Unless you know your comic books, you won’t know anything about Shazam or Black Adam. It’s because of this that DC hiring Johnson is a smart move. Dwayne has an incredibly strong fanbase whether it’s from the wrestling fans or fans of his acting. In the past couple of years, Johnson has starred in the G.I Joe and Fast and Furious films with more in those franchises to come. Johnson is now entering himself into another franchise that is struggling to grow.
Despite (in my opinion) having a stronger presence at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, audiences are still more excited about the Marvel Cinematic Universe rather than DC’s. Part of the problem could be that DC doesn’t have any big recognisable names in their films with the exception of Ben Affleck. Johnson’s addition to the DCCU is big. The fact that they have announced the villain of the Shazam movie before the title character himself shows the excitement that DC is hoping that The Great One will bring. Not much else is known about the film apart from Johnson and Hiram Garcia will be producing and the script will be written by Darren Lemke, who previously wrote Turbo, Jack The Giant Slayer and the upcoming Goosebumps adaption (yeah, I would be worried about the script too). There is no release date yet but Warner Bros. does have a DC-based film set for August 5th 2016, so I wouldn’t bet against Shazam taking that date. I think hiring Dwayne Johnson is an excellent choice to play the “anti-hero” and probably will be great in this role, I mean there is a reason Johnson is called the most electrifying man in entertainment.
