Ah yes, it’s that time again; the Oscars are upon us! Truly the biggest film event of the year, the Oscars provide many things. Not only do they celebrate and award the best films of the year, but they also entertain us with humorous sketches and presenters, anger us by leaving out our favourite films in the nominations and enrage us even further when the ones we actually do like don’t win. But I have to be fair to the Academy; when it comes to the acting awards, it always seems well deserved.

By Alex Doust Alright, before I start I’ll say that I am a Potter fan! Harry Potter has been a part of my life since some time in the 90’s when my mum bought me The Philosopher’s Stone audiobook. The first three films are brilliant; the last four films are also brilliant, but The Goblet of Fire is where it all goes wrong for me I’m afraid… The first time we spot Harry, Hermione and the Weasleys they are walking up the hill to the portkey to take them to the Quidditch world cup! Not as great a start as the book, which has a hilarious moment introducing the Weasley Twins’ ‘Tonne-Tongue Toffee’ at the Dursleys’ with hilarious results. I was really looking forward to seeing that scene in the cinema, the lack of which set the scene for the whole film, as a heavily edited story. By Cookie 'N' Screen Quentin Tarantino is an artist. His craft may be punchy scripts, dark humour, long haul films and ultra-violence but he is an artist nonetheless. That being said, here he presents his masterpiece, Django Unchained. Set two years before the Civil War, Django Unchained follows a slave (our titular character played by Jamie Foxx) who is freed by a dentist cum bounty hunter, Dr King Schultz. In order for that freedom, Django must help Schultz find The Brittle Brothers. An unlikely friendship is built and Schultz agrees to help Django free his wife Broomhilda (Kerry Washington) from cruel plantation owner Calvin D Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio), leaving whatever trail in their wake. By Glenn Mortimer Now, I like a Romantic Comedy as much as the next man. Or maybe more. Maybe less. I guess that depends on the man. If that man would rather be swigging away at Aldi’s own brand alcopiss, hand groping around in the dank darkness of his jogging pants while chortling away at Top Gear. I’m not like him at all. I’m not a fan of Top Gear. If I wanted to watch three pricks get excited in a car park I’d go dogging. I like Rom-Coms a lot more than THAT guy. I have no idea why I’m standing next to him. By Magne D’Mellow Based on the novel of the same name, Warm Bodies is a paranormal/romantic comedy about a zombie who falls in love with a normal human, slowly curing him. Directed by Jonathan Levine and staring Nicholas Hoult and Teresa Palmer, Warm Bodies is light hearted and doesn’t take itself too seriously. The concept itself is sounds quite cheesy as things of this nature usually are, especially as this is the 9001st zombie apocalypse film we’ve seen, however in this movie the apocalypse is more of a backdrop rather than the main focus of the film. By Graham Osborne Films; it seems like everyone has an opinion on how to do them better than those jumped up filmmakers with their multi-million dollar budgets, fancy computer graphics and incredibly attractive actors swanning around. To be honest I’m no different, well except that I have a degree in film making, so I feel slightly more validated than those punks with their blog posts when I say that I can fix this sort of thing. So to kick off a new regular feature round these parts, the first film I will attempt to fix will be Captain America: The First Avenger. So, without further ado, let’s see how to make this better… By Helen Fulton After seeing the trailer for Star Trek Into Darkness umpteen times, you'd think I would be sick and tired of it, but once again seeing the trailer in 3D at the cinema last week just encouraged me to think even more about what may be happening in this year's hottest to-be blockbuster… and only 3 months to go! By Glenn Mortimer There’s a little game I like to play when being forced to watch films like this. The kind of movie that makes me want to rub my own excreta into my eyes to block out the turgid mockery of the entertainment before me. This game is far easier to play than it is to explain to your partner why you’re groping blindly around for the pizza with shit streaming down your cheeks. By Robbie Jones For the first time since 2000’s Cast Away, Robert Zemeckis graces the big screen with a live action film, as we take to the skies and back again with Denzel Washington in the character driven, thought provoking Flight. By Christian Kern Man of Steel, whilst looking better than the previous attempt at breathing more life into the Superman franchise, still looks like a bad move on Warner Brothers part. The problem with Superman Returns was that it was stuck in the 1970’s and Superman lacked any true physical confrontation. Man of Steel seems to better itself in this respect, however from what has been shown in the trailer it comes across as more of a 'finding one's self' story and that can be rather taxing for those of us who have been following Big Blue for years. |
