The release of Pride yesterday into UK cinemas is just one of a number of films that have mined (excuse the unintentional pun) the years of the Thatcher government, and particularly the miner’s strike, for potential. Pride sees the striking Welsh miners unite with another group attacked in Thatcher’s years, the LGBT community, in protest. Thatcher’s legacy on the silver screen, with the exception of The Iron Lady, has not been a positive one, with the focus squarely on the people most negatively affected by her policies. Why that is is an interesting debate, but we need to look at the films in question to uncover it.

Thatcher’s legacy on the silver screen, with the exception of The Iron Lady, has not been a positive one, with the focus squarely on the people most negatively affected by her policies. Why that is is an interesting debate, but we need to look at the films in question to uncover it. by Laura W I have a confession to make. The following films that are listed, I have not seen. While I love my movies, I just never got around to watching some of the greatest and best films ever to exist. Once the IWG film team has finished reading this article, I’ve got a feeling I’m going to have things thrown at me, especially from the team’s fearless leader. Team – I’m sorry. So here, without further ado, are several films that I’ve never seen, but haven’t. by Robbie Jones Rodents are horrible things. They are filthy little creatures that scuttle around carrying diseases and gnawing on whatever it can find. But slap a celebrity voice on them and they’re the cutest thing ever! To celebrate the release of The Nut Job, let’s take a look at some of the most famous examples of rodents in films by Liam McMillen Sometimes to revive a bit of life into a franchise, they choose to have a cast switch just to milk a bit more money out of the franchise before it dies. In honour of Ironclad 2: Battle for Blood, I look at films that have changed their casts dramatically. Hint: the change in cast doesn't help. by Vanessa Hague There are a few things I feel very passionate about in this world - bacon, video games, anything Michael Fassbender stars in - all great ways to get me to blab uncontrollably for several hours until everyone around me is either sleeping or has run away in a bid for freedom. However, there is one thing that will really get me ranting without fail and that is the all encompassing subject that is award season snubs. I hold grudges for an insanely long amount of time (it's a rather big flaw that I should work on at some point) and when my favourite actors, films, driectors and film genres aren't recognised by whatever awarding body, I do take it slightly personally. by IWG Film Team Sometimes, you come across a movie that is so brilliant it can do no wrong. Other times you come across one so dire that you want to rage about it forever. But whatever polarising side of the coin a film falls on, sometimes, massive gapping holes of logic can't escape your attention. Here, the I'm With Geek team look over five of the biggest lapses in logic that exist in moviedom... or at least the ones that really stick in our craw. Oh, and careful, there be SPOILERS AHEAD! by Daniel Faulkner Happy UFO Day everyone! Brain invading, body snatching, blood curdling and occasionally heart-warming? A list of the ‘absolute’ top five must see alien movies. It was a tall order to narrow it down to five, but I did it anyways. These are the essentials. Well, kinda… I mean, there are loads. by Robbie Jones Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past few years, you have no doubt heard of the TV program Mrs. Brown’s Boys, a comedy starring Brendan O’Carroll as Agnes Brown, the Irish matriarch of her family. The show, adapted from various stage plays and radio shows written and performed by O’Carroll in the 1990s, has become a massive hit, as made evident by the upcoming film release, Mrs. Brown’s Boys: D’Movie. To celebrate the release, we’re going to take a look at the history of men dressing as women in cinema. by Liam McMillen There's been a trend in Hollywood lately where alternative or indie film makers are given the reigns on mega-blockbusters with astronomical budgets. Names like Rian Johnson, Shane Black, Gareth Ewards, Josh Trank and Colin Trevorrow are names that many film fans will know, but lately they'll be know to a larger fanbase because they've either made or are making big franchise movies. Here are the films you should watch before you watch their franchise movie by Robbie Jones Films do many things. They make us laugh, cry, happy, angry, sad, excited, enriched, so many things. But the one thing they do best of all: they let us escape. Doesn’t matter how old you are, what you do for a living, if you have a family, if you have good friends, if you’re still in school, none of that matters. Because no matter who you, life can get a bit shit sometimes. It can get boring or leave you wanting more. That’s where films come in. Films are the doorway to new worlds that we inhabit for a few hours and forget our problems. And we watch certain characters and think “Oh God, why can’t I be them?”. Well, here I am to list the characters who I’ll bet most of you have wished to be at times, and I certainly know I have. |
