But is it good or bad? Vanessa andLiam battle it out!
Manchester based paper mache tyrant Frank had been louting it up on our television screens for as long as we can remember. And now he has been immortalized on the screen. Out on DVD today, Frank is loosely by Ronson's own memoirs about cult-comedy icon Frank Sidebottom, hence the instantly recognisable paper mache head that Michael Fassbender wears throughout the majority of the film. This probably goes someway to explaining the story - Jon (Gleeson), joins up with Frank's (Fassbender) band after their keyboard player is institutionalised. Jon believes that this will finally allow for his dream of becoming a singer to come true, however he quickly finds that not all is at it seems. Frank's band is, for lack of a better phrase, extremely out there. All members seem to have mental health problems in various degrees and their methods in producing music are alternative.
But is it good or bad? Vanessa andLiam battle it out! by Vanessa Hague GOOOOOOOD MOOOORRRNNNNING, VIETNAM! The immortal words, the infamous quote; if you haven't seen it and have some interest in film, you've still probably heard that line in some form. Good Morning, Vietnam which was first released way back in 1987, is probably the role that catapulted Robin Williams into Hollywood superstardom. It is quintessential Williams viewing, his trademark wit, humour and bouncing-off-the-walls energy is present here in buckets. by Vanessa Hague The Birdcage is one of my favourite types of film - easy viewing, a flamboyant comedy about drag queens that actually has a real message to it when you look closer... I love it. The Birdcage which was released in 1996, is a film adaptation of the play La Cage aux Folles and stars Robin Williams in the lead of Armand Goldman. He plays a gay drag club owner who's life is turned upside down when his son, Val (Dan Futterman), comes home one day and states that he plans on getting married. Cue Armand trying to pretend that his life is "normal" as his conservative rightwing future in-laws come to visit. Plus, these aren't just any old in-laws, one of them is Senator Kevin Kelley (Gene Hackman) who happens to be the co-founder of the "Coalition for Moral Order" and is caught in the middle of a terrible scandal and thinks the wedding of his daughter will once again cement his standing as a senator who stands for good traditional American values. by Vanessa Hague When it was announced last September that Ghibli's co-founder Hayao Miyazaki would be retiring, there was a lot of speculation concerning what that meant for Studio Ghibli. This weekend however, saw it's other founder, Toshio Suzuki, announce what many were fearing on Japanese TV - that the Studio will be ceasing production of any new films, taking a break to consider what the future entails for the famous Japanese animation film studio. by Vanessa Hague There are a few things I feel very passionate about in this world - bacon, video games, anything Michael Fassbender stars in - all great ways to get me to blab uncontrollably for several hours until everyone around me is either sleeping or has run away in a bid for freedom. However, there is one thing that will really get me ranting without fail and that is the all encompassing subject that is award season snubs. I hold grudges for an insanely long amount of time (it's a rather big flaw that I should work on at some point) and when my favourite actors, films, driectors and film genres aren't recognised by whatever awarding body, I do take it slightly personally. |
