To go hand-in-hand with this mysterious creature, we also have an endless list of talented actors that have portrayed this vampire at one time or another. The latest actor to play this bloodsucker is Luke Evans in Dracula: Untold, but let’s begin our look over the various interpretations of the character by going back and looking at one of the most iconic Draculas of all time. by Hayley Charlesworth Last Halloween, I tackled one of my pet subjects, vampires in cinema. This year, it’s time to switch the focus to the vampire’s hairier cousin. And who better to take on cinematic lycanthropy than I’m With Geek’s own Teen Wolf obsessive? From Universal horror classics to menstruation metaphors by way of a pretty hairy basketball game, here are just some of the best werewolves in cinema. by Sean Narborough I hate Halloween. Number of reasons why: gives people permission to act like arseholes just because it’s Halloween; trick-or-treaters constantly knocking on my door; and, most of all, the shit ton of shit horror films released every year! So, how do I get through the 31st day of October every year? Alternative Halloween films! Films that have elements of a scary film, but have something a little different about them. So, here are my four alternative Halloween films to watch. by Hayley Charlesworth Delving into the “Brill” side of TerriBrill this Halloween, we look to a kids TV movie from the 1990s for inspiration. H-E Double Hockey Sticks (a common euphemism for "hell") was a Halloween staple alongside Hocus Pocus and Halloweentown in my youth, though it has sadly been largely forgotten. This is a travesty. Based on Lukas Foss’ opera Griffelkin (I know, right!), H-E Double Hockey Sticks is the story of apprentice demon Griffelkin, played by Will Friedle, who is sent to Earth by Satan (in the form of Rhea Perlman’s Ms Beelzebub) to steal the soul of hockey star Dave (Matthew Lawrence) in return for his being the youngest person to win the Stanley Cup. But via some trickery on Griffelkin’s part, they come to a very specifically worded agreement that means that Dave’s team, the Delaware Demons, will win the cup, but Dave does not necessarily have to be on the team, and Griffelkin immediately fixes his transfer to the hopeless Annapolis Angels. But after bonding with Dave, being convinced by the angel Gabrielle (Gabrielle Union) to side with Good, and a mean collapsible chair trick from Ms Beelzebub, Griffelkin is soon on a mission to secure Dave his victory, helping him become a team player and better the chances of the Annapolis Angels. by Kerri Anne McNally So... What's your favourite scary movie? I can almost guarantee that it isn't a recent one... It's October, which means the internet is piled high with articles about the best scary movies to watch for All Hallows Eve. Unsurprisingly, most feature the classics: Halloween; A Nightmare on Elm Street; Friday the 13th; The Exorcist; The Texas Chain Saw Massacre; Child's Play; The Evil Dead; The Shining, Rosemary's Baby, Candyman and, of course, the one that arguably started the slasher flick phenomenon, Psycho. by Leah Stone It's that time of the year again where our TV and cinema screens get plastered with horror films, guts, gore and spookiness. However, if you are not the sort of person that likes these types of films, then it can be hard to find something to watch that suits the Halloween spirit. Do not fear!! Here we have a list of child friendly films that are suitable to watch over the Halloween period. by Paul Costello Ig Perrish is a troubled young man. Suspected of the violent murder of his girlfriend, he becomes an outcast to the whole town whilst police investigate the crime. However, after a night of drinking, Ig awakens to find horns growing out of his head. Initially concerned, he quickly discovers his new appendages have the ability to drive people to confess their sins and give in to their own temptations, and so he decides to use his new ability to investigate the murder himself, clearing his own name and, more importantly, getting revenge. by Laura W Hannibal Lecter... Leatherface... Norman Bates... Samara. All of these characters have one thing in common. They terrify us, the viewers. They've left us cowering in our seats and desperately wanting to turn the film off (but we won’t, because we want to find out what happens in the end!). With Halloween only a couple of days away, let’s take a look at some of the most frightening characters in cinematic history. Fair warning, some spoilers are contained herein. |
