by Cookie N Screen The opening scene to Hercules goes something like this; young enthusiastic boy tells the legendary back story that swiftly (and dramatically) introduces the audience to our main protagonist. Our hero then proceeds to, in rapid procession, name his collection of warriors and their specific talents. "Witty side kick with tiny knives. Token strong women who has, predictably, a bow. Crazy animal like guy. Old crazy wise guy. Assemble." They all kick arse and make witty comments. From this opening paragraph, and indeed the scene, you can gather exactly what Hercules is like. It's very Power Rangers or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. With this energy, you are drawn in, you'll love every second of it. Even if you regret it after. by Jo Johnstone With the constant struggle between the developing world, who yearn for better opportunities and the developed world, who fear that immigration will strain their countries resources. There is no easy answer or solution on how to best handle immigration. With the documentary, Who is Dayani Cristal? director Marc Silver aims to present a personal story to the debate while trying to discover the identity of one man. The documentary begins with the discovery of a body. The unidentified man has died while trying to illegally enter America through the Arizona desert. Despite his lack of identification the Pima County Morgue team investigating his death have one clue, a tattoo across his chest that reads ‘Dayani Cristal’. Through the work of the morgue team, a missing border crossers family and the personal journey of one man the film builds a picture of how and why people chose to cross the American border. by Matthew Howe Looking back at a recent post about re-watching classic films, I realized I missed a few. Yes, we have been gifted with two separate fan Q&A events to revel and participate in, bringing us that ever bit closer to the actual film. by Cookie N Screen There is no denying that Terry Gilliam is a master in cult cinema. He has carved many dystopian futures full of complexities and intellectual visionary philosophies. Movies such as Brazil and Twelve Monkeys have this distinctive look; colourful in a world of rot and decay. Technological advancements while history crumbles away, these worlds are rich in a sole character trying to fight back against this weird norm that everyone has accepted. Gillioram-esque has become a cinema term because we are so accustomed to his creations. The Zero Theorem is the latest movie to add to the Gilliam roster. |
