By Josh Crooks After being riddled with bullets outside of an irradiated town in a near empty server my nerves were shot. I'd managed a good six hours of scavenging for food, resources and ultimately better weapons to defend myself in the near-baron wasteland; even building myself quite the wooden plaza in the shade of a nearby mountain. Suffice to say, the death cut deep. Whilst this entire diary could be dedicated to the game's mechanics, it basically takes the survival aspects of Minecraft (whilst whittling down the amount of resources) and Dayz's PVP style multi-player (whilst increasing the player count) which leads to every single death counting. This isn't your little brother's Call of Duty, where you get back up within the next five seconds without a care in the world. A death in Rust is dark. So much so that recuperating your losses and starting again can be a bigger hurdle than starting up in the first place. By Josh Crooks At the tender age of eleven, the original Call of Duty (2003) was released to the general public and was widely regarded as the best of the WW2 genre, doing better in one game than Medal of Honour had done in several. Suffice to say I loved it, as being raised on the PlayStation I had suffered the worst (and the best) of the inferior series so it was interesting to see somebody finally get it right. Now it wasn't until very recently that I have been as blessed in the 'PC hardware' department as I was in 2003, so when Infinity Ward released Call of Duty 2 (2005) two years later the title passed me by. In fact, the only impact the series had on me between 2003 and 2007 was that of the knock off titles the company released for the X-Box, which I purchased in the hope of recapturing former glory. By Josh Crooks Being a massive 'batfan' and video game geek has rarely been as profitable as it has during the Arkham Asylum series released by Rocksteady in recent years. Before this, gamers were treated to a slew of games that ranged from bad to mediocre (Batman Begins, Batman: Return of the Joker) with the odd diamond in the rough such as the original NES game and fantastic Batman: Vengeance. So, with today’s announcement of Batman: Arkham Origins, new developers Warner Brothers Games Montreal or WBGM for short (the people who developed the Wii U version of Arkham City), have big shoes to fill. With Deathstroke already announced as one of the 8 rouge's gallery villains/assassins to be in the game, here's the list of characters I'd like to fill the other 7 slots. By Josh Crooks Having not been fully engrossed in a Tomb Raider game since the Year 2000 release of Tomb Raider Chronicles, it came as much of a shock to me as it appears to have done to others when I was presented with a polished, and engrossing new entry to the franchise. The first sign of danger was that of the Fast and the Furious style name change that came along with the often dreaded idea of a reboot - not a positive sign (see: The Omen, The Day the Earth Stood Still and Total Recall etc.). Of course what I was forgetting that unlike the film industry, video games have taken far better to the retreading treatment, with games such as XCOM Enemy Unknown and DMC topping this years and last years 'Best of' lists respectively. |
